Let's put this as its simplest: Do you want to cry? Do you want to get emotional? Are you having a hard time and want to watch something touching and deep to unleash your feelings and move on? Or maybe you just enjoy this kind of stories that envolve deep feelings and want to watch something that makes you feel a lot of things. If it's any of those cases, this is your goal.
Usually I don't write reviews and less with such known animes like this one. But I need it. I need to get rid of this pain on my chest. I need more
...
people to watch this because it's so precious that every single soul on this planet should give it a shot.
Best way to describe Anohana in one word would be: beautiful. It's just so beautiful on any aspect. But of course, it will demand compromise from you to take it seriously and get into the story to actually feel it. If you have ever lost someone you loved so much and he/she's gone or he/she passed away, putting yourself under the skin of the characters would be really easy.
---
STORY (9):
The story goes around a girl, Meiko Honma (Menma), who passed away when was only a child and her five childhood friends which are now teenagers. Back then, they were all very close, but since she has died, they took apart from each other and changed a lot. All of them seem to have got over it and moved on with their lives, but the truth is none of them have successfully done it. Each one have their own secret and feelings around what happened which are slowly being revealed throughout the anime. It begins when Jintan, the main character, starts to see what he thinks it's an hallucination of Menma talking to him. Once he realizes that he's not dreaming and she's actually there, Jintan tries to reunite the group to fulfil Menma's wish so she can go to heaven and finally rest in peace. He's the only one who can see and hear her, that's why they don't believe him at first but she manages to communicate with them.
I won't spoil anything, I've just made a pretty short summary so you can know what can expect to find. Seriously though, give it a try, you won't be disappointed. It could fall into cliches, yes, but it's so organic and perfectly crafted that it's not bothering at all. Also it's not depressing even if it seems to be. Although it has dark and really sad moments, it will make you smile and even laugh your ass off as well.
Why I didn't give it a 10? Just because some of the twists are cliche and it could be made better honestly. It totally works for this story by the way, so it's a nice 9.
---
ART (10) & SOUND (7)
Have did I say how beautiful it is already? There's no much more to say about the art. It looks simple but pretty, colorful and bright. The soundtrack isn't mindblowing, but is nice too and works so great.
---
CHARACTERS (9)
As I said before, Anohana has a few cliches, specially speaking about its characters, but it's not annoying at all and each one of them is lovely and charming in its own way. They're very different but at the same time they all share the same tragic story and a big trauma for their friend's death. Again, I wouldn't give it a 10 because they're not particulary original.
---
ENJOYMENT (10)
Do you know that feeling when a story digs deep under your skin and sticks in your mind for hours after you've finished it? That's what will happen if you watch this. It's short, 11 chapters are nothing and you're going to devour them.
---
OVERALL (9) & CONCLUSION
I can't say enough how much I've loved it, but I wouldn't be honest if I'd put it a 10. Anyway I think it's a story that's worth it to watch and enjoy for yourself. And prepare the tissues, my friend, because yeah, you're gonna cry like a baby.

Well, before I start this review, I think it's important to point out that it's not particularly necessary to have watched the anime or readed the manga to watch this movie and understand what's happening. It was clearly made with that in mind, but yeah, you probably would end it with a thousand of questions floating on your head. The main problem with this kind of movies is that neither the fans and people who's not familiar with Nanatsu no Taizai would fully enjoy it. And that's what I want to discuss here.
If you're from that people who never watched the anime or readed the
...
manga, as I said, you will understand the main plot, but everything is gonna feel so ridiculously forced and fake you're not gonna like it. You don't even know who the eff those people are and what they do, why they are together, why there is a princess with them, why they have those amazing and outstanding powers, what those powers are, why they are known as "seven deadly sins", what are those sins and why they have one of each, why Meliodas is so overpowered, why he's with the good guys if he's a demon... So I thing you got the point as the list goes on and on. And no. You're not an idiot for having these questions. You can't make a movie about such a long and complex story, with a side quest and expect to be working for people who doesn't know a sh*t about it. Just for the record, I highly suggest you to read the manga or, at least, watch the anime. It's so damn good and this movie is fine, but doesn't even get close to the real thing. So there you go.
Now, for us, people who have watched the anime and/or readed the whole manga and still does it because we love it, this is some sort of disappointing joke. It's... fine, but just that. That's why I hate these kind of movies. They could have made a canon movie with a part of the main story as a longer chapter of something like it. For example, Fullmetal Alchemist, the oldest anime series, made that. You watched the whole thing and then the end of the story was in the movie. And it worked so perfectly. When you don't wanna do that, you have to make a side quest that doesn't affect at all to the main story, which turns out to be a huge meh. They don't do anything important or relevant, they don't learn nothing, they ended exactly on the same spot as they started. So what was the point? Entertain? Well, I was entertained because I love the characters, but after twenty times of them repeating their names and that they are the seven deadly sins and all that, I was kind of bored. And when they FINALLY started fighting, it felt so poorly articulated and artificial. Usually I love how they combine their powers on the anime/manga and everything moves on so smoothly, but here was the opposite. And again, it's not bad, it's just mediocre and unnecessary.
So, about the rating...
STORY [7]:
After what I have said above, the plot was interesting to say at least. It amused me the idea of goddess' descendant living on the sky and fighting against the demons as well as the other clans on earth. The lore of celestians has hooked me since the beginning. Maybe that's just another reason why I felt disappointed on how everything went on later. But again, it wasn't bad at all. It was so funny to me that there were alternative versions of Meliodas and Elizabeth that were engaged. But again, it was a little wink to the fans and as sympathic as it felt, I can't help it feeling grumpy because of the canon. But whatever, besides of that, I liked the idea. The celestians were very well settled and they worked on this plot.
I almost forgot to mention the six black knights, which I loved them, but they felt very weak. Bellion was such a badass villian and it was the only thing on the whole movie that I'd take it as canon and I'd be glad to see/read more about him and his relationship with Meliodas in the past.
ART & SOUND [10]:
Not much to say here. The art was very similar to the anime and it's stunningly amazing. Same goes for the soundtracks. Some of the songs are taking from the anime (Perfect Time is one of them) and I can't say enough how much I like it.
CHARACTER [7]:
I don't want to talk about the sins, because I already said a few things before, so let's just talk about the original characters of this movie. They were fine. The grandma was absolutely my favorite since she was so blind in her believes never seeing the real thing even if it was happening right in front of her nose. She was hilarious. Nothing more to add. The rest of the characters were just fine and simply crafted, so I can't say much.
ENJOYMENT [8]:
This is the point when I'm confused and don't know exactly how to confront it. The movie was mediocre, it have lots of plot holes, mistakes, contradictions compared to the canon story and etcetera, but... it's still entertaining. I mean I watched it entirely without feeling the pass of the time, so it must mean something, right?
OVERALL [7]:
In conclusion, it's not a great movie. I wouldn't recommend it as the best thing I've ever watched and of course I'd never recommend it to people that's new to Nanatsu no Taizai. Go ahead and watch the anime, read the manga or do both, you'll enjoy it. But this movie it's not worth it really, except if you're hungry for more and tired of waiting for the next season. I think maybe this movie would fill that hole, at least for a little time. Or if you like Nanatsu no Taizai and you're just bored as hell, you can kill some time with this one. But don't expect something mindblowing and of course don't take it as canon, because it isn't.

[NOT spoilers here]
For starters: if you haven't readed it yet, get the eff out of here and get yourself confortable to read it. NOW.
Just go. Don't waste any more time. You'll have plenty of time to thanking me later. Go ahead.
To begin with, I must confess I'm not a frecuent manga-reader, I only read them either when the anime is discontinued or when I don't feel to waiting an eternity for new seasons, just like this case. So let's put this as simplest: I've readed a few mangas including NNT and that's it, so maybe if you're searching for an experimented manga-reader's review, this one
...
won't do it. BUT on my defense, I can provide the sight of a skeptical that doesn't usually enjoy reading them and it turned out to be amazed and amused like a child on x-mas night and has hungrily devoured it.
Now let's just jump into it, shall we?
I met Nanatsu no Taizai recently from my little brother who continuesly had recommended me to watch it on Netflix and I had it on my "plan to watch" list for quite a long time. Finally I gave it a chance and OMG. I felt so stupid for not watching it before. But we're not here to talk about the anime. Once I watched the whole thing in two days, I realized two things:
1. I have a serious problem with addiction to this sh*t, and
2. I'm absolutely not waiting for the next season that isn't even anounced yet.
That's how I started with the manga. And if I already loved it before, now I'm devoted to it. I'm not willing to make any spoilers, but let's just say that things are getting seriously dark and deep on the middle arc and gradually worst on the last one. There's so much sh*t going on all over the place and the twists constantly punch you on the face. If you, like me, are so into character developtment and backstory, you would be loving this. But let's cut it so we can rate it properly.
STORY [9]:
What could I say that it haven't said before? The story settles on the middle age kind of scenario mixed with holy knights carriers of outstanding powers which defend the realm and seven fugitive criminals known as "the seven deadly sins" who appear to be invensible.
Not hooked yet? Add a fugitive gorgeous princess that escaped from her castle and is looking for the seven deadly sins because they're the only hope for the people as it seems that the holy knights are the bad guys. I think you should give it a try, seriously.
This story has been constructed so well with so much details that it's pretty impressive. As I said, I don't want to spoil anything and I know the first arc is huge and kind of boring, but I swear of god, it pays off. Once everything is stated, the characters are known and the basic info has been given, the plot pushs up rapidly and nonstop. And yes, it has some cliche situation, but they managed to fit it very natually and it works great. Why did I give it a 9 instead of 10? Because of the beginning. It really takes its time to break flight even if it's so worth it, it could push you away.
It's epic, fantastic, action-packed, dark, deep, emotional, romantic, funny and very entertaining. Yes, it has everything. My mom hates anime/manga but she loved NNT. That should be enough for you.
ART [10]:
As said, I'm not especially used to read mangas, but all I can say about the art is that is stunningly beautiful and awesome. Every single character is very distinguishable from each other and has its own unique style, which is refreshing since there're lots of characters on this story. The emotions and facial expresions are so well achieved and drawn very accurate. The fights are clear, epic and detailed; you're not going to get lost within the squares and going to be able to follow it perfectly. I gave it a 10 and, again, I'm not an expert on this topic, but to me it's a 10.
CHARACTER [10]:
I've already talked about how much I love them, but let's explain it a little further. Of course we can't have a shonen without cliche situations and stereotypes, but again, they feel so natural and well served to the story that it doesn't bother at all. Every word spoken, every decision made, every step taken has its purpose. There's so much backstory with every character and the much you know, the more you understand their desires and love them. And there're one for any taste, but all of them are likeable, even the evil ones.
Something I'd like to point is the love. Shonen has love sides in its plots usually, but there's a few that do it so well like this one. Again, not spoiler, but love is a recurrent topic that encourage the characters to fulfill their fates. Relationships are geniously articulated and feel real.
Last thing: Meliodas, the main character, is probably one of the better crafted characters had ever made for a shonen. He's so complete and complex that could easily be a real person.
ENJOYMENT [10]:
Not much to say on this one. It's very entertaining, you can easily get lost in its pages and everytime you finish a chapter, you just want more and more. Besides of the beginning that it could be a little bit tedious, I've never got bored, not a single time through the whole 304 chapters of this manga.
OVERALL [10]:
Probably I sound like a fangirl, and I honestly don't give a eff about it, but this is my opinion. It's not a master piece, but I can't give it a 9 or less otherwise because I don't have an argument for that. It fulfill its commitment: entertain, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else than that. So for me, it worked. In my opinion, is so worth the try. Especially now that we don't know if the anime will continue (go watch it if you didn't ffs).
