This 2006 anime is based on an illustrated story by Shigeru Komatsuzaki which was serialized between 1948 and 1951.
It can be best described as a Jules Verne or H.G.wells story, or better yet, as a Flash Gordon comic or a comic by Edgar P.Jacobs made into an anime.

The basic premise of the show is "Aliens are invading Earth and they're ruthless, we got to fight back!" and this is done on an alternate modern Earth with a retro-futuristic flavour, which is the same as saying the scenario, the background of the story is a kind of idealised sci-fi future as it could have been envisioned ... in the early 1950's.

Project Blue Earth SOS is full of tropes, stereotypes, old stock characters and "deus ex machina" plot devices, but this is mostly done for mood purposes and surprisingly so well done that it's enjoyable once you accept this fact.
However there are no ubiquitous ecchi, mawkish moe or otaku fanservice. And no tsunderes.

In my opinion the best thing in Project Blue Earth SOS is the rhythm it has. There aren't any boring moments, scenes are excitingly chained, high and low spirited points are balanced perfectly. There are chases and fights, action a plenty but drama and romance weren't forgotten.

Animation wise, it's very good for a TV show, it's not on a movie quality level but definitely is 21st century standard. Good inbetweening if you know what I mean.
Sounds and voice acting seemed o.k. to me, but to be honest I'm no expert on this matter.
Music is probably the weakest point of the anime. No memorable songs whatsoever, but there aren't ruined scenes by awkward musical scores either.

It might have been only me, but I believe Project Blue Earth SOS starts to change itself more or less around the middle, accelerating the change towards the end.
What I mean is that what I have written about this show having a vintage feeling is completely true for the first half of the series, but the second half, specially the last 2 episodes have an increasingly more contemporary feel on them.
As a result the ending is just a tiny bit unexpected.

So, does Project Blue Earth SOS worths spending 6x45min watching it? Yes. it does!
