Both are battle royal anime that has a video game come to life scenario. In Darwin's Game, Kaname downloads a mobile app and is given a sigil or ability that he uses to fight other players and win challenges. In Btooom!, Ryouta is brought to an island and is forced to kill other players using bombs, which is exactly like the in-anime, titular video game he frequently plays. Both protagonists are also overpowered, Ryouta is the top Btooom player in Japan and as a result, he has a leg-up on everyone else on the island; meanwhile, Kaname has a sigil that allows him to create any weapon. On top of their op abilities, they also have a blonde female sidekick to assist them.

Both feature a protagonist that everyone assumes is a scary thug because of their appearance. As a result, they end up in fights as a result of misunderstandings surrounding their looks. The main difference being Ju Ingong in Transfer Student Storm Bringer is aware that people are afraid of him and uses his opponent's fears and assumptions of him against them; meanwhile, Seiichirou Kuroda in Angel Densetsu seems mostly oblivious to people's opinions of him and is unaware that his actions lead to starting a fight with another character or gang.

Both are animated series based off a game. Similar to the cast in Persona, the characters in Grimms Notes are able to take on a persona that aids them in battle. The difference being the cast in Grimms Notes takes on the appearance and utilizes the abilities of fairy tale heroes and heroines to aid them iin battle; while the cast in Persona, have an entity that fights alongside them in battle. The main characters in both series are "wild cards" in that they can take on multiple and any persona while their friends are limited to one or a select few entities.
