'If there was a machine that mass produced anime then Rising of shield hero would be it's default fantasy product'
Rising of shield hero is a very conflicting series to rate.
My brain says it's an absolute waste of time and I should rate this below 5- but on the other hand it feels dishonest cause I did have some fun with this.
Now, to explain more clearly-
In every anime that I have ever watched nomatter how good or bad, there was atleast some novelty to it- some originality no matter how small scale- be it the overused zombie apocalypse themed anime, or high school rom com
...
or whatever. They had atleast something I could say that ok so this was something interesting or special in the this anime.
But the absolute mad lad that Shield hero is- there's absolutely no novelty, uniqueness or speciality whatsoever.
It is not objectively a bad show, it just adds absolutely nothing to your life in anyway. But it doesn take away some of your precious time that in all honestly could be spent more effectively by doing literally anything else. I might sound too harsh but you get the point. Rising of shield hero is so brain dead that watching the series is exactly the same as not watching the series.
The story is so uninspired I'd say even a 10yo could probably write a more interesting story. The characters are also so uninspired- it's again just like the default characters of a RPGMaker game. The main protagonist is the only charcter I somewhat liked cause he's the only person that felt more or less relatable and had atleast some kind of unique personality. Other than him, you have your typical setting where hero is unjustly framed by the 'evil royalty' while it's brain dead citizens are constantly thrashing you. Even though it doesn't matter, still saying anything else might spoil the story.
Now all that said, I still had fun with the series! Maybe it's the absolute childish premise of the 1st episode that hooked me which I thought was the most interesting and the most blatant unoriginal event at the same time.
And good thing is there is actually a payoff at the end- a very similarly childish payoff but I still absolutely loved it!
Except these 2 events which in my opinion are basically the beginning and the end of the story, nothing interesting goes on.
Oh and btw loli lovers will be rejoiced to know this series is quite packed with that stuff. Personally I'm not at all a fan of Lolis but there you go- another reason to either watch or completely avoid this show.
So you see my dilemma? I had fun watching this but I also realise it was a complete waste of time. And it's not one of those- 'in the end you had fun and that's what matters' kinda series, it's the kinda fun that I completely forget within 30 min of watching the series. Shield hero might as well as be the most forgetable anime I've ever seen. I feel bad to give this a bad score cause then it'll feel like this is an objectively bad series which it is clearly not.
But also I absolutely do not recommend this series to anyone as I still feel this is an absolute waste of time. Therefore, my final score is an absolute average 6/10

I don't generally write reviews, and I don't plan to do so in future either.
I just felt the need to write it this time cause I honestly feel I was tricked by the MAL's rating in this case. If it were lower I'd probably never have watched this series. I feel writing about this anime is the right thing to do, if I can aware even a single person then it'll be worth it
