This fun story by Yuichi Ito was awarded Excellence Price at the Japan Media Arts Plaza in 1997.
The Caterpillars are popular in Japan and the bugs have been used in several short ONA's including some commercials.
Very nice Stop Motion Claymation, somewhat on the cute side, but definitely worth watching. The Caterpillar showdown was hilarious.
Impressive how you can tell a story with no dialogue at all.

Watching this ancient short made me stare at the screen.
I even watched it 3 times. It definitely has to be one of the more obscure, intriguing and WTF entries here on MAL. The chorus is catchy. Found myself humming Dom-dom hya-la-la, dom hya-la-la the second time I watched it. The master of cut-out and silhouette animation Ofuji Noburo did an impressive job animating it. Story is ultra short, and still he manages to get the message through. A celebration and homage to life, prosperity and the gods. Nov 5, 2009

Nominated for the 1980 Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film and the 1980 Young Artist Award for Best Motion Picture featuring youth. Won the 1980 Young Artist Award for Best Musical Entertainment.
Sanrio the company behind the "Hello Kitty" franchise actually made this. Don't let that be a turn off. Go watch it and forget about "Hello Kitty". Hard to find, exquisite weird and trippy stop motion movie. Highly detailed, dark yet beautiful. The story is mysterious and put you in an almost dreamlike state. It's confusing and rather difficult to describe. You'll have to watch it to see what I mean. I've seen it more than once, and ... Jan 30, 2009

Being a fan of old school anime I just had to watch Ninja Resurrection.
There's plenty of action and samurai hack and slash. I'll be willing to bet, it even has blood and gore enough to satisfy Dracula himself. The OVA has some interesting characters that could really have turned it into a great watch. Horror / blood & gore fans might find some of the scenes interesting, I know I did. Their not interesting enough to make me give the OVA a decent rating though. The plot is so lacking that you end up wondering WTH you've just spent time watching. ... Jan 24, 2009
I like old school anime a lot. Since I hadn't seen this one I decided to watch it.
The RPG was great fun, so I wanted to check out the OVA. I shouldn't have done that >_< It's one VERY cheesy OVA even if you consider how old it is. Still it's entertaining in a quaint and WTF kinda way. Has loads of action and hack and slash, BUT the story is filled with so many inconsistencies that it's both confusing and annoying. The plot is pretty bad, and the horror effects are medicore. Sad sad adaptation. If you want to get some cheap laughs, or your really bored, go ... Jan 23, 2009

Very very nice!
Did not like it much when I watched some episodes while it was ongoing. Had almost made up my mind to drop it, BUT then I changed my mind, and started watching it all over. Watching it back to back made one helluva difference. It has some comedy, which often means I don't like certain series. Heavens be blessed that did not happen while I was watching Shikabane. I'm so happy I decided to give it another try. The story and the characters interaction makes it a great watch. I want to watch the sequel Shikibane Hime Kuro, but I'll hold my breath and try ... |
