Both feature unique art styles which can be initially off-putting along with an almost frenetic pace. Society is dark and twisted, with corruption and greed dominating everyday life. The main characters are flawed and misguided, as well as being hunted in one way or another by the key antagonists. Also, the musical score adds great depth to powerful moments, of which there are many in both. Death is portrayed realistically, with all the loss, regret and pain that comes with it. There is no glory in death, only suffering.

No question: Wolf's Rain is the superior anime, but they do have a bit in common. Both center around a group that is seen as a menace to society and which the audience is meant to root for. Both also boldly kill off an almost unbelievable number of characters. You watch these individuals succeed through many trials, then suddenly that changes and one by one, they're systematically killed. The shift is quite sudden in both cases, but even more pronounced in Wolf's Rain. Obviously, watching the first season of Hakuouki is necessary, but the large amount of character death happens in season two, thus this recommendation. Frequent action and attractive character designs feature in both as well.

Loss and the betrayal of human decency are key themes in both of these productions. Persecution and inhumanity are portrayed in harsh and realistic ways. Both succeed in pulling the viewer into the middle of the conflict, with a keen sense of empathy for the characters. "What would I do if faced with this cruelty? Would my actions really be much different?"

These are two of the funniest dubs out there. Both are episodic and rely heavily on gags and quips, and both succeed at making you laugh like a madman. Great liberties were willingly extended to the dubbing production of Ghost Stories by the Japanese creators, and these were taken with gusto. Don't miss either of these comedic gems!

Granted, there are huge differences in setting and presentation, but both center around one man's quest for ultimate power and the many sacrifices that come with this struggle. Political intrigue, war strategy and tactics, along with individual prowess on the battlefield dominate the storyline.

Besides the fact that both revolve around skilled swordsmen with similar emotional backgrounds, they also share gorgeous animation, deftly executed action sequences, and powerful soundtracks. Must-sees for sure.
