Gosick is an anime that starts off mediocre but improves significantly toward the end. What attracted me the most was the aesthetic and the setting, which is approximately in the pre-World War II period. I like animes set outside of Japan, and Gosick does this by taking place in a fictional European country, whose name, honestly, I don't remember and don't consider relevant for this review.
At first, the anime feels like a rather dull detective mystery, where the puzzles are solved almost as if by magic. This left me confused, especially when the protagonist mentions the "fountain of wisdom." Is it something magical? Or is
...
it just a reference to her pure intelligence? By the way, I think it's important to talk a bit about some of the characters.
Kujo: He is the typical Japanese protagonist. One thing that bothers me is that, being the third son of a Japanese imperial soldier, he received rigorous military training throughout his life, but is incredibly ineffective in hand-to-hand combat. What kind of training was that? It seems more like he was beaten up every day. However, he is a good protagonist, fulfilling his role of loving and wanting to protect Victorique, which, in the end, I find quite cute.
Victorique: A classic loli who, at this point in my life, after watching so much anime, no longer bothers me. On the contrary, I like Victorique. She is a classic tsundere but stands out for dressing in the lolita style (often gothic) and smoking a cigar. According to the lore, she is 15 years old but appears to be a complete genius. However, the mysteries she solves seem to be resolved almost "magically." For example: "Oh, because the guy dreamed of a blonde girl and was at the crime scene, the murderer must also be blonde." Despite this, she is a good character, and I really wish the mysteries were better constructed.
Their teacher: Irrelevant name, irrelevant to the story, and screams a lot.
Flatulent salamander: I don't bother to remember her name. She’s an English girl who also studies at the school and is extremely annoying. Many times, when Victorique wants to be alone, she insists on bothering her. Her only role seems to be competing with Victorique for the protagonist (which, by the way, she loses badly).
The anime is mediocre until its midpoint. What kept me watching was Victorique, the beautiful visuals, and the historical context, as World War II plays an important role, and I'm a history nerd.
I tried to write this review with as few spoilers as possible. In short, Gosick is a mediocre anime until its halfway point (rating 7), but with a very good ending that moved me (rating 9). Although the first part is a bit boring, it’s important so that you sympathize with the characters and better appreciate the final part.
My final rating for the anime: 9. I like the aesthetic, I like the story, and I loved the ending.
