I'm not the biggest KyoAni fan in the world. I love them as much as the next guy, but I haven't seen everything they've done, and I didn't love everything I saw. Even so, I feel like I can say with some confidence that Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai might be the pinnacle of what this studio does best.
On the surface, this is a solid romantic comedy centered around characters who are either afflicted with or recovering from the titular Chuunibyou (translated by Hulu as "eighth-grader syndrome"), with some delicious bits of drama thrown in for good measure, but if you've seen other KyoAni shows
...
you know that that's not what it's REALLY about. Chu-2 is a really touching and funny show about falling in love while growing up and figuring out who you really are. There's a bit more to it than that, but believe me when I say it's worth it to watch the show and figure the rest out for yourself.
The show is expertly written, start to finish. The characters are charming and likable, although I may be biased since the characters with the titular Chuunibyou delusions hit a little to close to home for me. The larger plot transitions smoothly and naturally between moments of romance, comedy, and drama to the point where you might not immediately notice the switch in some places. Even in the more comedic sections of the plot, you'll be invested in the characters and their budding romances. True to form for Kyoto Animation, the show really tugs on your heartstrings, and the final episode really touched me in a way that no show really has since I watched Angel Beats for the first time a few years ago.
The rest should be obvious considering the studio. The art is absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the animation is fluid and lively. The dialogue is convincing and well-acted. The OP and end credit songs are great. The rest of the soundtrack is well put together as well; it really blends with the scene and pulls it together well, but the flipside to that is that it does sort of fade into the background. It's well-done, but not especially remarkable on its own.
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai is expertly made from start to finish. The solid comedy, touching plot, and lovable characters will keep you hooked from start to finish. If you're a fan of romance, comedy, or emotional drama, this show might be about as good as it gets.
