So at first I watched the movie and for me it was decent with the good and fluid animations . It was a decent watch with a seemingly preferable ending. Now for some reason I thought of reading the Light Novel, bought a physical copy and finished reading it in a couple of days. My initial impressions were, Jeez they skipped almost anything and everything from important scenes and characters and just released an abbreviated version of it. The initial start and ending were completely altered. Almost two other leading side characters were completely ignored and two-three characters that were super important to the build ... up were just never shown. They altered the whole reason why Anzu wanted to go to the tunnel and why Kaoru went in there himself. They never showed how they planned their future together after leaving the tunnel or how the tunnel itself disappeared. Matter of fact, the only thing I can give to the anime other than the animation is that Anzu's grandfather had a bit of more backstory comparatively but then again, it may have been a decent stand alone original movie or smt but since it isn't, it really did a horrible job adapting the Light Novel. In short, I'll just say read the Light Novel even if you've or have not watched the movie.
