At their core, both series share a main theme: tragedy. A normal human life, forever changed into something monstrous, but still not fully one or the other. A physical change becomes a psychological one, and all that ensues after is pure misery for everyone involved. If you like to watch others suffer and would like to suffer yourself, please give these shows a try.

Durarara!!
|
An urban setting with a supernatural twist and a veeeery convoluted plot involving a large cast of characters interconnected in ways you wouldn't immediately expect. Constant POV changes, unexpected character reveals and developments, and mystery after mystery. Both focus on philosophical and psychological themes, leaning far into what makes a character tick. Durarara!! is more average anime watcher friendly with its references and gags, while Paranoia Agent offers an avant garde experience with strange visuals and a little less coherence.

Casshern Sins
|
A barren wasteland of a setting and a main character villainized by society, his memories of the how and why of those two things being connected long lost. Trigun has a lot more levity than Casshern Sins (which, to be fair, has next to 0), but it still has an underlying melancholy and sense of loss. Casshern Sins is rather depressing, but has moments of light and hope. Thought Trigun was too silly? Watch Casshern. Thought Casshern was too dark? Watch Trigun.

A lavishly dressed young person with a mysterious past solves supernatural mysteries in partnership with a tall, dark, and handsome man who isn't exactly what he appears to be on the outside. Both series feature blood and murder, but give a good dose of comedy in-between so nothing gets too heavy for too long.
