Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Both are subversions or critiques of the more standard values associated with the magical girl genre. Madoka Magica is the more direct of the two, shot through with a howling anguish present from the very beginning, and is well worth the watch, despite some problems (it is overly stylized and it all happens much too fast, with some characterization getting lost in the forward thrust of the story). Princess Tutu is more mature, more self-aware and more beautiful; it is slow-burning, but equally tragic, and it takes on not only the genre itself but the practice of storytelling as a whole. Despite some dull moments, it is nearly flawless, both mechanically (the editing is classically brilliant) and in its significance as a cultural and historical artifact.

Very similar in premise and progression. Both are supernatural slice-of-life series that focus heavily on character and world-building. Both feature a cast of characters who cannot fully explain their origin or purpose, who are subject to a mysterious and occasionally suspicious power structure. I reckon Haibane Renmei does it better - it's very nearly a masterpiece, even if it starts slow.
