This is a criminally underrated manga and I'm not completely sure why. My guess would be that people don't like the art style, which is fair enough, but that's such a surface level criticism that I find hard to take seriously. I read another manga recently called Ningen Tokei, and although it isn't great, it still has its merits. Yet it has a 5.10 on MAL, just because of the art style.
I think anime and manga fans are a little spoiled. But I digress.
What makes this manga great? For one it is constantly engaging and exciting, its devilishly hilarious because of its dark
...
and twisted sense of humor. Plus it just works as an over-the-top crime thriller. It's the kind of thing that Tarantino or the Coen Brother's would come up with if asked to write a manga.
Don't let the art or the low score scare you away, this one is a hilarious thrill-ride.

This is a piss-poor rip off of the movie Dead Man Walking. While that movie was about redemption and owning up to your past, this is a lousy melodrama about star crossed lovers. Comparing Sean Penn's character to the prisoner in this comic leads me to feel both humored and an irate irritation. Any of the nuance and moral ambiguity is thrown out the window in favor of tear-jerking schmaltz. I say this is a clear rip off of Dead Man Walking, because there is clear overlapping elements; both are about a nun who helps a prisoner on death row during his final days, both
...
have a character trying to find god in his last days (although Dead Man Walking handles this with a subtlety that this piece of trash is incapable of), and both have a character performing music both the death row inmate dies.
Watch the movie and avoid this terrible imitation.

The story is really dumb. But if you're the type of person that will read this after being intrigued by the plot-line, then you might enjoy it. I read it because I like darker stuff, but rather than being pitch-black, this is more like a shit brown. The main girl is drawn really attractively so that kept me reading, plus the rest of the artwork is well done. But holy shit if this won't make you lose a few brain cells in the process of reading it.
I think I should reiterate that the only enjoyment I got out of this was that the
...
main girl is hot and sometimes you get to see her tits. Skip this if you are over the age of 15 or have higher standards in writing then badly written NTR.

This thing was intriguing for the first three episodes, during which I kept asking myself, how long can they keep this up?
They didn't....
Well, at least not until episode 15 rolls along by and the plot sort of picks up again. If I were to list some of the most problematic things about the show, they would be most apparent in episode 4 to episode 14. Tonal inconsistencies; one moment everything is happy-go-lucky, the next moment the drama is heightened to the point of melodramatic cheese. Confusing character motivations. Sometimes Subaru does or says things and I'm left thinking, why?
I think another major
...
issue this show has is it's plotting. If I were to recommend this to someone and they asked me what it was about, which of the three story-lines can I pick from? The plot just veers from obstacle to obstacle without a strong enough narrative through-line. Sure the obstacles are enjoyable, but I'm left thinking, 'how does this effect the overall story?' Even when Naruto is kicking ninja #4221 in the butt I know that that makes him one step closer to his ultimate goal. Subaru seems to have no overall goal other then to react to the situation he is in. Sure he eventually comes to the decision that his life is meant to look after Emilia, but even that decision feels like something he just stumbled upon.
The "reset" plot device, was another issue. It felt gimmicky to me, like the creators just wanted to merge two popular anime story lines; trapped in a fantasy (or what is basically an MMO) world, plus time looping. Once the third episode is complete and you watch further, you start get the feeling that the story was made up as it went along without much consideration for overall cohesion.
Either way, this is a messy, yet enjoyable romp. It would have been a 7/10 if it was more streamlined and focused in it's story telling. Also if the characters were better. It did hit interesting moments with Rem and Ram's backstory, but that was brief and felt forgotten about in subsequent episodes. Plus Wilhelm van Astrea had an interesting Moby Dick-esque backstory, although it was a bit on the nose. The worst character was Romanée-Conti Petelgeuse playing this ridiculously camp villian that was just annoying.

I can't remember the last thing that moved this much and still left me thinking about it after finishing it. I feel moodier, more emotional, I feel like somebody I know died or I broke up with my girlfriend, I'm left feeling depressed.
I feel like my perspective has changed, my opinions have changed, my life has changed because of this manga. Isn't that the best thing you can say about a piece of art? That it genuinely moved you so much that your feel your life has changed because of it?
I don't know if it will do that for everyone, it ticked all the
...
right boxes for me. Probably because I identify with Punpun so much. I've pined for my own version of Aiko, I've been left confused and unsure of what to with my life once I reached adulthood, and like Punpun, at times I've felt smaller and dumber than those around me.
This manga explores so many themes its hard to list all of them, but what I mostly got from it is isolation and depression. This ties into what I meant by being smaller than everyone else, not physically, rather metaphorically, like Punpun is. Punpun's size and birdlike figure might be a gimmick to draw readers in, but it is such a wonderful representation of how it feels to be different, isolated, lesser.
The themes are plentiful, and so are the great characters. Everyone is fleshed out and feels human. There is an arc in particular, "the mother arc" that is truly beautiful and devastating at the same time.
The art is fantastic, I found myself slowing down so I can suck in the artistry.
I'm going to be re-reading this one again and again.

For what it lacks in the art department, it more than makes up for with it's energy. This energy is best described as great shot composition, snappy editing, eye catching colors, a tight narrative, and a great soundtrack.
There is no narrative fat, no filler, nothing is unnecessary to the overall story, the plotting is air-tight and everything that happens, matters. This show so skillfully packs in so much narrative into a short eleven episode series that most wannabe writers oughta watch this and take notes, hell, even the professional ones.
The main characters are great, they all have wants and goals, dreams, and a strong backstory.
...
Even some of the minor characters are fleshed out. You get to know so many characters that it becomes difficult to know who to route for. It also has a great long running gag in the form of one character trying to find himself (you'll know what I mean if you seen it.)
The direction is so kinetic, the use of split-screens take what is a janky animation style and make it livelier then some of the best animated shows I've seen. Not to say that I hated the animation, because I didn't. I see it as a stylistic choice, one that pushes the boundaries of what can be categorized as anime. Although at times the animation style did lend itself to some lazy images.
Fuck if this wasn't a blast to watch. Mostly likely going to re-watch this one again soon as it was terrific. Don't let the animation style fool you, this thing is fantastic.

If you're looking for an anime that is intelligently written, has realistic characters, and none of the pitfalls of modern anime, then this is the one you want to watch.
Shinsekai Yori is one of the most well written anime's I've seen thus far, and that's probably because it is based on an award winning novel. I chose to watch this show because recently I've been searching for well written anime, stuff that I could show anybody without explaining, "it's anime, just go with it." This one had nothing I would need to explain to an outsider. No fan-service, forced comedy bits, or melodrama.
You have
...
to give the first five episodes a shot before the plot starts moving, but it's never a dull watch. Early into the show, the animation is gorgeous, the music is hypnotizing, and the world building is always interesting. Later on the animation goes down in quality a lot (most likely because of budgetary reasons) but the narrative becomes tighter and more engaging.
The story follows a group of characters from childhood to adulthood, it's epic in it's scope and imagination. It's themes will make you think about sexuality, racism, classism, and how illegitimate the fantasy of a good or bad sides are. In Shinsekai Yori, there is no good or bad. There are two warring factions that both have major pitfalls.
Finally, this story has great character development, which is especially the case for Squealer, who is so interesting he reminded me of a Shakespearean character.
Everything isn't perfect. There are moments in which the writing falls flat. Things just happen or the characters have revelations, but instead of showing us, they just tell us after the fact. I'm sure those elements were more fleshed out in the novel, but it the show it felt like they will pulling solutions out of their ass sometimes. Also sometimes it is far too exposition heavy for my liking.
8/10....this is a much watch for anybody who considers anime to be a lesser medium.

I enjoyed this thing enough to read it in one sitting. At first it was the shock factor that gripped me, then the cringe factor, next 'oh my god, what's going to happen next'- factor, and finally the 'Aww, that's kind of sweet' - factor.
This manga is in two parts. One is the opening, which deals with a weird love triangle and the second is a much more normal love triangle that felt traditional and sweet.
I know that the mature thing to say is the second part is superior, it had real emotional depth, character growth, and admirable moments. One of those admirable moments
...
being when the Kasuga (our protagonist) mends his parents dying marriage by announcing out loud "I'm home!" (you'll get it if you read the thing.)
But the sad, juvenile truth is, I preferred the beginning much more, and to be honest I felt let down by the second act. I wanted them to stay with the sordidness and the ugliness.
I got that the second part was important so we can see Kasuga's growth. How he moves on from the poignancy of his past, and how he learns to face his fears and live for himself. I also get that the first half has worse writing then the second half (also a much worse art style). An issue I had was the first half was Saeki Nanako. As much as I thought Saeki's character was interesting, I don't know if I ever totally bought her decisions (why do hot girls always go for losers in these things?)
Even still, the first half is superior. End of discussion.
Hey, what can I say, I guess I'm just an edge-lord at heart. One who loves his shock-value. Also, there is a serious lack of Sawa Nakamura in the second half, which was a bit disappointing.
