Having hear of all the hype surrounding it, I was cautious going into KLK. Rarely is something as good or bad as the rumors say.
To summarize my impressions - it's overhyped. I've seen worse, but I've seen better too.
It has elements from Saint Seiya (cloths), TTGL (over-the-top everything), FLCL and a few other anime.
From a technical standpoint, the music is fine but nothing to wrote home about. Honestly I can't remember a single melody from the score right now. Art/animation is...really bad and choppy. The line tracing often looks like it was done by a 5-year old, with oddly distorted arms, hands and faces, and
...
the number of frames in an the animation is often really low. The show tries to hide it with fast-paced action and designs that split your attention, but cannot really accomplish that.
Weather that art/animation styles is because of budget problems or a deliberate "artistic" decision, I do not know, but it changes little. A turd put on a piece of paper and displayed in a museum as art still stinks the same as any other.
The plot is fast-paced and full of action, but convoluted with many things happening for convenience, "just because" and things thrown in because of "rule of cool". No explanation is often given and the show breaks it's own established rules whenever it feels like it. (for example, 1-star uniform wearers can't even hurt 3-star uniform ones. Our main protagonist has a 10-star equivalent uniform, and yet still gets hurt by 3-star uniforms)
The comedy is... hit and miss. Given that I like shows like Excel Saga, Nichijou and Cromartie High, I expected to love this...but...The main comic relief character, Mako, is IMHO one of the worst such characters I've ever seen. The only guy who had me laughing is mr. Nudist Beach.
The fanservice is off the charts, and the general "message" seems to be to accept nudity (most obvious in the unlocking of the uniforms full power)
The characters...again it seems like the show is trying too damn hard, most obvious with the "antagonist" Satsuki, whom they pull every single cliche to try and make her "badass". Obvious example includes beating people with her "spirit" as a kid (even tough such power has never been mentioned before or after), brooding and similar. Not to mention her actions seem very irrational at times (such as refusing to tell Ryuko anything, and prompting everyone to fight her, despite knowing that she has a superior uniform AND a weapon designed to destroy them - meaning that no one logically stands a chance)
Despite all of it's flaws, it is still a fun romp and manages to be entertaining enough.
Do take note that 6 is NOT a bad rating (since it puts the show in the "above average" category), especially since I do not give out high scores lightly.
