I don't usually write reviews, but the general opinion seemed too negative of what this show deserves and I want to address that. I'd rate it 9/10, being not perfect but really good at most things it touched on, which is why I'm slightly overcompensating.
While spoiler free, I vaguely mention the (in my opinion) main topics of the show, which could hint on things. Basically talking about what the show is and isn't about.

Starting off, some of the negativity stems from the tagged romance and expectations of either a classic (=unrealistic) take on it or in contrast being against the presence of the topic
...
itself. But while the show definitely covers love, it is mainly used as an underlying force to get to other topics of how badly things can go wrong, how one sometimes really needs the help of another to cope with things and what role a parent should play.
Other complaints seem to stem from not acknowledging the fact that the story portrays Japanese society and that meeting Yoshida might have been a lucky occurrence. While the first is mainly about understanding, for the second I can only say that Yoshida looks like a sympathetic and kind model person trying to think for himself - which sometimes make him seem too perfect or unrealistic - until you notice what he purposely shows to society on the outside and that his inside not always matches his outside behaviour.
Also, given that I heard that the LN sexualized the scenes more, I feel like the anime adaptation is an improvement giving off a grounded and oddly realistic impression.
The good parts of this anime is showing how one can make some bad decisions when things pile up, how it can be hard to get out of the hole you found yourself in alone and how there is something worse then growing up without ones parents including their role in life. While this is not the first show to touch such topics, it is a really well done take on them, especially how characters and story have reasoning behind them and how the resolution of the situation is realisticly plain - which in and of itself can be worth a watch.
