First, I'll have to admit to my biases towards this anime. In truth, Sankarea has always felt like a fever dream that I shoved into the back of my mind many years ago. When I was younger, my aunt gave me all the volumes of a Silent Voice. It was a compelling story that even a 10-year-old kid could appreciate. Despite this, there was an ad for Sankarea at the back of the manga. To be honest, it made me shit my pants, I use to be deathly afraid of zombies growing up, like I use to play Minecraft exclusively in peaceful mode, just to

avoid zombies. After I shoved that image of Rea all zombified, life went on until one day I discovered Sankarea again. At this point, I was older and not afraid of zombies anymore, so I gave the anime a chance.
Now to talk about the anime itself. For whatever reason I was captivated by the first 3 episodes. The buildup for how and why Rea ended up a zombie was so intriguing. I believe that the first 3 episodes of Sankarea are some of the best in its genre. The animation is crisp, and the dark and dreary atmosphere it builds roped me in, I was hooked. But, to be honest with myself, the anime isn't a "masterpiece" in many aspects. It wasn't popular enough to get a second season, the anime formatted itself into a hole. The ending of the anime skipped like 10 chapters in the anime, and those chapters are long. Personally, I would recommend watching this anime to appreciate certain aspects of it. The main character isn't a normal self-insert, the theme is quite interesting as I mentioned before, and the plot has developments although I believe if it had a second season these plot developments would shine more thoroughly. I recognize that most people won't enjoy this anime as much as I did, but you're entitled to your opinion.
The reason I enjoy it so much is something I can't explain. Maybe it was the image I saw of Rea when I was younger. Maybe it was the first 3 compelling episodes. Maybe it was the fact that after finishing the anime, I immediately read all of the manga and I loved it. But honestly, I think everyone can agree that certain anime are considered good, but everyone has an anime that only they recognize as a "Masterpiece". Anime is art, art is subjective, watch it as you see it. I wrote to express my love for it.
