Reviewing Chainsaw Man is hard because I have 2 different views on it with each part, with only being a dozen or so chapters released part 2 at the time of writing this.
I'd give an 7/10 Overall but with some big caveats to that rating
Part 1:
Story; The story is fun but fairly weak. After getting introduced to the world, we know who the final devil Denji will have to face, with the adventure there being a fight with increasingly more and more crazy fights and characters. I feel this manga does a fun and great job getting there. Around Chapter 74, a twist that
...
has been hinted at starts, with great carnage that follows, but after chapter 80 I feel the quality takes a dive to the ending of part 1. Even though the ending didn't sit right with me the threads that were left were still compelling for part 2. Overall id give it 8/10 but the ending felt like it was trying to give cool moments but falls flat.
Art was solid throughout with only minor drops but overall 8/10 with some great panels.
Characters were a mixed bag. I enjoyed Denji for the most part but he was defiantly my least favorite of the main characters but he has some major flaws that make me dislike him. The side characters are my favorite parts since they are 1000% more interesting than Denji but I just wish the story expanded more on them since it felt like no one ever met the potential they had with their backgrounds. The dynamic between most of the charters is great however there are some like major ones that never felt right with me, like with Denji and Makima. Overall it feels wrong to give more than a 6/10 with how underutilized all of them were especially with the ending, however apart from Denji, I never really hated any of the characters until the last arc and enjoyed most of them, They just needed to develop or spend more time with the side characters before removing them from the stroy.
Spoilers Ahead.
Overall this is a great manga but when Makima showed her true colors, it never really sat right with me as well as the ending fight. The way the gun devil was shown was cool with how much death he brought, but was quickly killed and aki suddenly becoming the gun devilman into his death felt sudden. I also disliked the sudden shift of denji becoming Makima's dog, Powers death, then into the death of Makima.
The sudden "Death" of power to Chainsaw Man being his own person that's not Denji, only for power to "revive" and then reviving Denji causing her actual death to kill off Makima felt weird and left a sour taste in my mouth by the end.
With the open plot points with the control devil being reborn suddenly and Denji having to raise her, and Powers final wish to Denji to find the next Blood devil and "turn them back into power" and find her, I felt the story still had interesting places to go. However with part 2, so far Denji feels like he's back to how he was well before Aki's death, suddenly going to high school and focusing on the War devil, it feels like all that's been dropped completely and we wont get answers for those, killing most my interest in part 2.
Overall until the last arc I would give 7/10, but it's ending felt off to me, making the ending a 4/10. Good but with a disappointing ending and a lot of loose ends that feel dropped right after being introduced.
With Part 2 barely into its first arc, I cant give a true rating. By itself I would give it a 7/10 but since its part 2 and not a spinoff I cant give it more than a 5/10 with what was set up in the ending, however it's too early to tell if that will still be the case as it continues.
