The more I think about this show, the more that I appreciate it. I've watched it twice now, and I think coming back to it being older and more understanding has given me a new love for this show.
It handles a lot of themes on mental health very well and I think by giving us the in-depth and up-close look of a person going through such anxious and depressing conditions allows people to maybe get an understanding as to what someone with mental illness may be experiencing. Of course, this doesn't cover everyone, but I think the sentiment is there, and
...
there's much sympathy for the Hikikomori that you don't get to see much in real life. Most people think of them as "other," gone from society and that needs saving. And in some way, they do need to be saved, but not in the same way as these people with such complexes suggest. There are so many things it does right, and it really doesn't shadow over the more unruly aspects that someone may take up as a result of these more underlying illnesses.
I think anybody should watch this, and just know there are going to be very risky and uncomfortable moments, but that's because you grow so close to this character. NHK Youkoso! is a charming story that will have you hooked from the very beginning.

I've watched this movie about 3 times now, one time for class (meaning I've had to watch over a few scenes for more in-depth analysis) and I gotta say that it still holds up. I'm more mesmerized every time with the wonderful art that I wish would come back just once, but I know won't. I think just understanding the amount of work that went into doing this movie says a lot about the movie itself, and helps people begin to understand a lot of the central themes around it.
There isn't much to really talk about in terms of the plot.
...
You can approach it from a historical perspective, or view it from a more modern frame and it still holds up (especially since the Tokyo Olympics are actually so soon...). Seeing this movie in 30mm was also really cool, and I found myself this time focusing on the animation (though it was in dubbed, and I gotta say do not listen to the dub, please). Either way you approach this movie, there is something that will surprise you and will cause you to search for more, whether on screen or inside yourself.
I think that this movie lends itself to being overanalyzed and it kind of ruins the mystic of it. Why do we need to know exactly what happens past what is being shown? Why does everything have to mean something? I don't think this movie is as deep as you think it is. Intellectual nerds can get their fill but that's not me.

I will be honest, I don't like that there's are black characters that are central to the story, yet are voiced by Japanese people. There was one joke, in particular, that was really obnoxious, more towards the beginning. That being said, I think a lot of people make excuses for it without addressing the main question: Is there really a need to bring up race like this if he doesn't really struggle or overcome many racial tensions in Japan?
The issue in doing an anime about a team of people, especially in a series that only has 23 episodes to do it,
...
is that you have to flesh out every character. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough given to Musa for them to justify having a black character. Maybe one or two comments are thrown at him, and this pureness of his character handles the initial reaction, but he's already done running and quite honestly they didn't make any progressive comments on race in Japan at all. That's not what this anime was about, and really it just feels slightly more offensive than it should. Not that I was expecting a Japanese company about Japanese college students to really handle any racial tension with any sort of grace, I can't say that I will let this anime really pass on a great score.
That being said, I think that overall they did try to make a good series and I have enjoyed watching it. It gave me something to do, and I wasn't turned off from the first few episodes with a promise of something better. And I won't lie, I did tear up at a few of the bigger moments towards the end. I like seeing the more central characters grow, but I think that just maybe because I'm in college myself and I can relate to a lot of these characters. There's potential with exploring this idea that I would love to see more, and hopefully, there's a much larger step towards creating a more progressive storyline that I think anime severely lacks.
If you don't like sporty anime about groups of men doing things with the token girl character that stands as a goal of desire rather than be of much substance, then this might not be for you. I regretfully can look past most of these underlying themes to still get a lot out of the more sentimental moments, but what does that really say about me?

I think most people have already said everything there is to say about it, but for the sake of myself, I'm just going to write down what I remember.
I've seen this twice now, and I can reassure myself that I enjoy this one. I will usually recommend it to people that don't particularly like anime, or specifically sport anime, as I feel like it was a good intro for me. I think that people overhype it though, it's good no doubt but the story is kinda... it leaves a lot to be desired. It goes along fairly well, but I wasn't wowed
...
like I initially was the second time around. I think there are better stories for sure, but the art and animation really carry it so it's excusable. Not saying there are any plot holes, but it feels a little bare (maybe I just don't have quite the same taste for sports anime anymore).

Whoever wrote this top review is wack. This was such a sweet and innocent story. I enjoyed it and easily saw myself returning to this show when I had to take a break.
It's been a second since I've seen it so I'm going purely off of memory, but I can remember it pretty easily which is more than I can say for other anime. It's seriously so sweet and their chemistry is really cute. I appreciate that nothing really happens in this story, though I do know that they actually end up getting married. If you're looking for sweet, mindless
...
fun, then yeah you should watch this :3
