Recommendation and then a review is down below (review will contain spoilers from anime only perspective from episodes 1-14)
Recommendation:
I recommend it but it can probably be a hit or miss for a lot of people so go in with very low expectations so it will at least be higher than your expectations and for me it hit a lot of my check marks to like it, the least you could do imo is dip your toes in the water with an episode or 3 then decide whether you are satisfied or dissatisfied and drop or continue it

My thoughts on

the vibes that the eminence in shadow is giving me these are my opinions if i missed anything or am wrong my apologies
It feels like two stories are being told at once and it feels like a dark fantasy perspective and an isekai comedy perspective
The dark and serious tone comes from the dark fantasy genre due to its history and era of fantasy medieval like times and the terrible selfishness of human beings and trying to stop their inhumane acts
The comedy comes from the isekai genre where a chunibyo who wants to be the eminence in shadow gets isekai’d with a huge passive luck attribute but is also op due to training for the moment to attain magic to withstand a nuke to become a true eminence in shadow
Another extra hint of harem rom-com like aspects where he tries to be someone who he is not where the protagonist strives to be a background npc but things do not go his way and gains potential romance opportunities that he does not want by accident
Another comedy aspect is where it parodies those genres and tropes all together by being an anime that is self aware of itself showing that it is a normal anime by hitting all the normal anime tropes in its genre but in ways that it is hitting multiple anime tropes from multiple different genres at once on purpose in comedic ways which actually makes it not normal but pretty enjoyably great
So far i feel he has 3 personalities/personas which are:
Npc cid - wants to hide his true power to be the shadow in eminence by being a background npc
Shadow cid - not a hero or the final boss villain but being the person who controls things from the shadows showing everyone their greatness the eminence in shadow
Real cid/minoru - a selfish chunibyo who couldn’t care less if the other half of the world died, a person who gets pissed off at the people who disses the things he likes, a person who is willing to sacrifice everything… no a person who will sacrifice everything bcuz if that’s what he has to sacrifice to be what he wants to be then that is how much he wants to attain it and that’s how it should be attained, a person who strives to be an eminence in shadow bcuz that is his passion and his purpose even if he was the last person on earth that is what he knows he wants to do
He has two accidental potential harems and extra potential love interest that he does not romantically care for:
Shadows potential harem: some of the shades and numbers In the shadow garden
Npc Cids potential harem: Rose, Alexia, sherry, Claire(not really but she does have a brother like complex)
Real cid/minoru potential extras: akane(she somewhat knows that minoru has a mask she has gotten glimpses of real cid when he was tired at school bcuz he hides behind npc persona and does vigilante persona like stuff during the night) and arurora(bcuz cid did not act like shadow or npc when he met her inside the sanctuary)
Hope we see those two again someday bcuz they’ve seen the real side of cid the most so far
The dark fantasy side is giving off a good enough story, imo i think it’s great so far I’m pretty interested and invested in it and about finding out more about the world (yes i know other anime,manga, LN and etc. have or do have better story and writing for their worlds but that’s not the point i just like what it’s offering with the story their telling with the mixture of the self aware serious comedy parody stuff)
They keep making me want to learn more about the shades and the other numbers i want to know their personalities and about their backstories of how they met cid or how they were abandoned,chased, or captured for being a possessed
The comedy in the anime does not really make me laugh out loud (most comedy don’t) but it does make me feel giddy or chuckle and giggle most of the time which is just as good imo
I love the chunibyo edginess and corniness they often come off more as cool more than cringe imo
I also think it’s really cool how it’s telling two stories at once but that is also just my opinion
I enjoy seeing the girls feelings fly over the dense protagonist head trope but in reality he actually just doesn’t see them that way in a non dense way and does not care for people in a romantic standpoint and how some girls want his attention by showing off their accomplishments for a reward and he’s just like thanks for your hard work look at this purple fire and then they are just like omg the purple flames that gave me life during my darkest hour those moments just kills me it has been very enjoyable to me at least
Again I just love how they see him as a god whiles he’s just role playing its actually just great
I like that it doesn’t hide that things can attempt to get dark and that things can get dark or look uncomfortable and the gore is pretty enjoyable to see as an action standpoint from time to time
It’s also pretty comedic that he is being edgy due to role playing but the girls are being a serious edgy the combination of the serious comedy throughout the season has been great so far
Really am enjoying the eminence in shadow and what it has to offer as a show and the potential it’s giving off as an unpredictable but also somewhat predictableness due to clichés of a story, definitely am excited to dive deeper into the story of the eminence in shadow thanks for reading this far if you have
