This review contains spoilers for Tokyo Revengers Season 1 and Tokyo Revengers Season 2.
Tokyo Revengers season 2 has somehow managed to beat my expectations. This god awful abomination of a series has somehow gotten even worse. I thought that first season was trash, but oh boy, this season is somehow even fucking worse. How? How the fuck do you manage get even worse when the bar was already set so god damn low? This anime has got to be one of the most overrated pieces of garbage of all time. And it baffles me how an anime like this can even get a seaso- oh
...
wait the first season was a success, so of course they are going make another season of this trash. Gotta make that moolah somehow right?
This season suffers from the same problems that the last season does and more. I thought they set the bar low with the first season but this is even worse than the first season, which is both impressive and concerning. The characters look off model all the time. Its obvious that LIDENFILMS doesn't really give a fuck about this anime just by looking at it. The visuals in this show aren't even mediocre, they are just plain bad. The music is meh, it does its job. The opening's music is yet again done by Official HIGE DANdism and they delivered yet again another banger opening that is way too good for this anime. That's about the only good thing about this season. The ending's music is okay, I guess. A problem for the fans of the last season would be that the voice actor for Draken was changed due to him being engaged in adultery and having poor health. Other than that, the VAs are all good.
The story and characters are the real problem here. I would advise you not to think about the fact that no one is acting like they should in a setting, where its supposed to be resembling Tokyo of 2005, that no one has a shred of common sense in this anime and how everything is so nonsensical for a story that is taking itself too seriously, because thinking about that might as well be like creating more headaches in your head than the headaches that are the characters and the story. The story continues from where it left off last season's cliffhanger with Takemichi and Chifuyu being drugged and shot by Kisaki. How? well he admitted that he was the one who orchestrated the events that led to Baji's death and he says... sorry? And these motherfuckers believed that and got drugged the most cliche way possible, they believed this guy right away? Didn't this guy just admit that he planned all this and what does Chifuyu do? Accept his apology and drink beer with him? "Oh sorry I killed your friend, here let's drink some beer that "I" specifically made...." Couldn't these dumbasses have seen through that. Like aren't they grown up adults? Yet they still have the intellect of that of a pre-teen. I don’t really mind characters without a spine but Takemichi is not only that, he is a shitty human being. So after an entire season of Takemichi acting like an absolutely detestable human being, a piece of shit who tried to cheat on his girlfriend, twice I remind you, the first time with Emma and second with that prostitute, whiny little bitch who cries all the damn time, a weak motherfucker who couldn't do anything but by some "amazing" leap of logic became an inspiration for the other members of Toman somehow, did Takemichi actually get better? NO. What? did you actually expect character development from this anime? Well we see Takemichi's future self in alternate timeline throwing a temper tantrum in a video tape in the first episode. But no development. Nothing. In the second episode we see that Takemichi and Hina had entered the Black Dragon's turf and they try to pick a fight with them. The Shiba siblings told them them to get out of there for like 20 times. So…what did they do? Just stood around and stared. And Takemichi who is I mind you a 26 year old grown ass man is wondering for minutes what the symbol B.D. means, for minutes when a pre-schooler could figure it out in seconds that it is the abbreviation for the gang that they were thinking about for an entire episode. This motherfucker was thinking about Hakkai being a Black Dragon member in the future and it didn’t occur to him that B.D. means black dragon. Couldn’t he just connect the dots and figure it out? There's a theory floating around on the internet, that he is mentally blocked due to the trauma that he experienced during his childhood in the first timeline of the series and that's why he is so dumb, but does being mentally blocked make you cheat on your girlfriend? Does being mentally blocked stop you from improving your physical strength? He is an undeniable piece of trash. Also, why didn't they just run away or just slip by when B.D. weren't looking while they still can? they just had to wait till The Black Dragons turn around so some dramatic shit could happen, which is another problem with this show. Most conflicts could be resolved so easily if the characters in this anime didn't have a single brain cell in their fucking skulls. And Taiju starts beating the shit out of Takemichi in the middle of the street and no adult shows up to break it up in the streets of FUCKING TOKYO, LIKE C'MON TAKEMICHI, HIT THE GYM OR LEARN KARATE OR SOMETHING.
In this season, Takemichi confesses his time travel ability to Chifuyu in a shoujo-esque love confession scene and Chifuyu, like the buffoon he is, believes it all. How stupid does someone have to be to actually believe that time travel sci-fi bullshit? Mikey rides off with Mitsuya just to give him some stupid speech telling him not to leave Toman and avoids the meeting, which is I must say, highly irresponsible for a leader and couldn’t they just have talked it while riding to the meeting? And then Chifuyu gets enraged in a cafe full of people, breaks a cup, holds a piece of it in front of Kisaki, threatening him. Why? Because he disrespected Mikey? The same terrible leader who couldn’t even show up to a meeting because he wanted to run off with Mitsuya? And the entire restaurant is gasping at middle schoolers threatening each other. How about anyone of you get up your asses and do something about it before they damage the restaurant further? I mean, what could they do? they are middle schoolers. No no no, common sense doesn’t exist in this universe. And get this, Taiju, the guy who fucks people up, sells violence and has control of an entire squad called “Murder” is a devout man of God. Is that even Christianity at that point, sounds more like hypocrisy to me. You know how this show wants its audience to think that Hina is a good girlfriend and a good person? Well guess what, in this season we get to see her true colors as she beats the shit out of Takemichi for dumping her. Wow, thank god he dumped that psycho bitch’s ass. And Takemichi still cries? Because he still loves her? After all that? Seriously, all characters in this show are terrible. Hina somehow figures out that her dad is behind this. How? Never explained. And then they make up after the whole fight in the church and Takemichi is the one who kneels down and cries, not the bitch who beat his ass screaming, “I hate you!”. So that entire subplot was there for no reason other than wasting my time. In the fight in that church, Kisaki and Hanma stabs Takemichi and Chifuyu in the back, I mean who didn’t expect this to happen. Chifuyu gets tied up and after a few minutes somehow gets loose and calls Mitsuya to come help. How did Chifuyu get free? Off screen, I guess? And after Mitsuya gets his ass beat, he gives the others instructions on what to do and gives them inspirational speeches, and Taiju and his goons just give them a time off? Why? So that Takemichi can have a mental breakdown of what to do next? So that a dramatic scene could happen? And Mikey, because of some uncanny superpower learns about Takemichi being in that church, arrives with Draken on time and saves the day. What is that superpower? Find out next season. Plot holes on top of plot holes, so many that I have lost track.
Maintaining internal consistency of the rules of the world that the story is set in is important for a story to be good and it is another thing that this anime fails at doing. Like in a fantasy setting, a guy who can control rocks can't suddenly be allowed to control water without any kind of bullshit explanation, that is, at the very least, be believable for the world that it is set in. We see that the police exists in this anime but they rarely try to interfere in the buffoonery that these middle schoolers take part in, and fails at apprehending anyone even though arresting a bunch of middle schoolers would be easily doable. The police would just have to track them down, pull a gun on them and it would be over just like that. Yet they don't do it. This anime's story takes place in a world that is supposed to resembling the real world, yet it breaks so many rules in its own world and throws logic out the goddam window that the writing is not even lazy, it's just terrible. We have the cliche tropes like protagonist and most characters with non-existent parents, whiny shonen protag, the police and adults just come and go whenever the plot needs them to, middle schoolers looking like they are adults, yada yada.
Okay so, this show isn't supposed to be a well constructed story. Its supposed to be mindless fun. But what exactly about this show is fun, you ask? The ugly-ass fight scenes that barely has any effort put into them, the characters who are just dumb, one-note and one dimensional, the gangs which are composed of middle schoolers (how can anyone even take middle school gangs seriously?). The plot holes in this anime are endless, but this is "anime", so what did you expect? Anime doesn't have to be realistic to be good, it just has to be entertaining enough to watch, but it fails at that too as I've explained earlier. This anime is just ass. There's nothing to it. No style, nor substance. So why is it so popular? well here's the thing- I honestly don't know. I guess it has more realistic aspects to it than most anime which has magic and shit, to which I refute with, what part about little kids dressing up like goofy gangbangers with goofy haircuts, roaming the streets like hooligans without parental supervision, fighting other kids on the streets of Tokyo without the police or any adults being on any of their backs even sounds realistic to you? If a kid were to stab another kid with a knife and some other kids bring that stabbed kid to a hospital, the hospital staff would call the police and they will undoubtedly question what happened and arrest any possible suspects. If a bunch of teenagers were to beat up and gang rape another kid and the parents of the victim knew about it, they would report it to the police. Or if they didn't, the doctors would ask questions and the hospital staff would report it to the police. If you think that the above scenarios are what would happen in real life, then please try to think again if this anime is "realistic".
Maybe it is so popular because of the characters who are, in my opinion, trash. Takemichi is a piece of shit as I've explained earlier. Mikey is just bland and OP for no reason. At least with Levi or some other OP character there's some kind of bullshit reason like Ackerman bloodline or something. I guess Mikey is supposed to be some kind of quirky prankster who is stone cold on the outside, but what else is there to him? Nothing. Draken is also bland. He is Mikey’s sidekick, and that's it, has no depth whatsoever. Emma is the fanservice. Kazutora is the failed attempt of the author trying to understand basic human psychology. Naoto is the detective/sidekick character who doesn't even use his police buddies, we don't see any other police men help Takemichi other than Naoto and he has nothing to him other than wanting to save Hina. Hina is also just bland and it boggles me why Takemichi even tries to go through all the trouble to save this bitch who is just a cheap plot device with no actual characterization other than being kind. She also allows Takemitchy to get involved in gangbanger stuff. And she even beats him up like a crazy bitch. Wow, must be a great girlfriend. Kisaki is being painted as this smart, manipulative and charismatic figure but if one were to actually think about it, the ONLY REASON HE IS SO SMART IS BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS ANIME ARE SO DUMB. Chifuyu loves Baji and tries to do everything to avenge him, thats it. And also Takemitchy told him about the time travelling and he believed him right away, no questions asked. And thats another thing, how does everyone come to the conclusion that people could time travel in this anime? First it was Akkun telling Takemitchy he knew that Takemitchy could time travel and then it was Naoto telling Kisaki could time leap. Hakkai is just quirky just for the sake of it, which is a point that could be said about most characters like Baji. Taiju, the big gorilla guy who wants Hakkai to join his gang. “Oh, Hakkai I love you bro. Thats why I beat the living shit out of you everyday bro. WAAH, WHY IS GOD SO CRUEL?, even though I’m the one who’s abusing my siblings?”. And the others...who?... I can't remember anyone else. I guess there are a lot of male characters who are edgy, cool and all "bromancy", which is probably why a lot of teenage girls like this series. But isn't this supposed to be catered towards the shounen demographic A. K. A. teenage boys? It even fails at targeting the audience that it wants to, because the manga that this anime was based on was not published in a shoujo magazine. It was published in shounen jump.
It's as they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure and to me this anime is just overrated trash. This anime's first season was somewhat tolerable. But this? NO. I am done. This anime is not worthwhile watching. It is both disappointing and lacks in quality. It is not worth anyone's time and I just wasted mine.
