Lots of ups and downs until episode 4/5. From then on, the characters, especially Izumi, begin to develop. At first I was worried that Shikimori would only have eyes for Izumi and that the other characters would just be placeholders. However, that was not the case. With Kamiya they throw in an interesting character that works well in combination with Izumi and Shikimori. Shikimori's soft hearted nature is revealed as she comforts Kamiya and so my initially anticipated problem has not materialized as Shikimori cares for others too.

As someone who is not really versed in this genre, I was pleasantly surprised. This is thanks to the likeable protagonist, who is by no means childish or sex driven. Other characters, with the exception of Arianne, remain uninteresting. I find it particularly striking that the author creates a coherent story with meaningful intrigues and a large world building. Fan service is also properly placed here without playing down absurd things. Animations and especially CGI stand out positively even if many fights seem stiff. What I would like for the second season are more balanced fights and a generally better understanding of the combat system.

It starts as a promising adventure for a likeable main character with her grumpy cat and attracts with handsome characters like Osono, however the trial gets pretty monotonic after the first job of Kiki is done. Fortunately this atmosphere is cleared after Kiki loses her basic ability of flying and her real sense of being a witch. This as the only refreshing component does not reach up to other ,,Movies like Spirited Away and Grave of Fireflies“, which are stuffed with plot twists and atmosphere changes throughout their story.
