Backstage Prince is a heartwarming story of breaking the restraints of cultural traditions. This story follows a forbidden secret romance between a famous Kabuki actor who is socially awkward and hates human interaction, and his assistant who is the only person he feels comfortable with. There are unique aspects to this story like the addition of Kabuki theater and the male being only comfortable around the main lead; however, the main plot points can be found in almost every shoujo romance. Whether it’s a love rival, a character from lower social standpoint that causes conflict, or discrimination by the public, these can all be found ... in hundreds of other romance mangas. Also, because of the incorporation of Kabuki, I would not recommend this series to someone who has little to no knowledge of Japanese culture. There are some authors and translation notes that help explain some things, but it would be easier to understand with some knowledge of the country's traditional culture. Overall, this is a magnificent series for a quick and heart-fluttering read.
