Maou-sama, Retry! was a show that I had every reason to pass on, being another yet another seasonal isekai. However a certain scene 13 minutes into the first episode caused me to stick around. Why? Why would I submit myself to a genre I generally avoid? This is because 13 minutes into the show, Maou carries a girl named Aku on his back and proceeds to run to their destination. On paper this doesn't sound remarkable at all but watching is a completely different experience. We get to see his awkwardly animated legs (coupled with a blur effect to
...
signify his speed) carry the two of them through one of the most generic looking forests I've seen in awhile. It was absolutely hilarious.
That is the main take away I had while watching Maou-sama, Retry! It wasn't amazing in its story, animation, characters or sound. Filled to the brim with every cliche you can think of, excessive fan service, most of the female cast falling in love with the main character. Despite all of these shortcomings, this show ended up being extremely enjoyable. I actively looked forward to continuing this mess.
If this had been better than it was, then the cliches and characters might have bothered me. However it is exactly because of all of its shortcomings (if I even want to call them that), that I had a massive smile plastered on my face throughout the entirety of the show. I enjoyed this much in the same way I enjoy low budget/poorly acted movies. Are they bad? Sure. Are they enjoyable? Absolutely.

Spoilers in this review.
This series really let me down. There were times when I downright loved the show, such as those moments early on with Pacifica and her siblings. One such moment was when Pacific, when feeling depressed, went up to Shannon and leaned on him. The way the scene was shot and executed really sold me on their relationship. Despite Pacifica always whining and complaining, the way it was played off with her siblings made it feel like they all loved and cared for one another.
One segment I particularly enjoyed was Episode 16, where Pacifica loses her memory and gets
...
taken in by another man was another episode in which I enjoyed a lot. I wasn't expecting to like it as they had her forget her memories (a plot device I have never been particularly fond of), but her chemistry with Furet was really touching. Watching them slowly grow closer, to the point that she can't stand being separated from him was fun to watch. I'm sure I could have watched a 12 episode slice of life built on those characters alone.
Shannon was by far my favorite character. Miki Shinichiro (the voice actor for Shannon) has always been a favorite of mine. They way he talks just makes me like the character, and I feel I could listen to him talk for hours. The segment where Shannon becomes really attached to a little girl he finds became one of my favorites in the series. While he seems lazy and unenergetic, he also usually feels competent and reliable.
Aside from Shannon, his dragoon whose name I've forgotten, and Pacifica, nobody got proper development. Cin's story arc went nowhere, Leo remained useless comic relief, Raquel barely did anything aside from improving Shannon's move sometimes. It makes me perhaps irrationally mad, since the setting and some of the core ideas present in this story could have made it really good. Episode one left me in such great hope. But my lack of investment in any of the characters made almost all of the drama pretty boring.
When the story started to get more into the guardian genes, and Peacemakers, was when the show slowly began its decent from potentially a favorite, to something much lower down on my list. Which is a real shame since I really wanted to love this series.
A weak ending brings what might have been an 8 or 9 down to a 6. It had its moments but I felt very frustrated and upset by its conclusion.

Before watching Gunbuster I had given up on watching anime for quite some length of time. I was in a weird mood where even shows that I can enjoy as of right now, left me unmotivated to continue the episode after more than a few minutes. I wanted something to cleanse my palate.
Two episodes into Gunbuster and, apart from the backdrop of some giant conflict with aliens, I still wasn't feeling this show. Then episode three happened, peaking my interest. By the time episode four ended, I had goosebumps all over my body. A lot of that
...
episodes impact was carried by the excellent soundtrack leading to an amazing moment. I believe I watched the last segment of episode four, three times before continuing on with the series.
Despite a slow start, Gunbuster got me back into watching anime, in a time where nothing else was interesting me. It starts off slow but when it gets good, IT GETS GOOD. Give it a shot if you also want a change of pace.

Harukana Receive is a 12 episode anime featuring beach volleyball. As someone who both enjoys cute girls and haikyuu, I decided to give it a shot.
From the preview, and length of the season, it was apparent this wasn't going to a tense, emotionally gripping sports anime, full of camaraderie and blood pumping moments. This is very much the junk-food sports anime of the season. While it manages to fill that role nicely, its ultimately forgettable anime that you will find yourself consuming, being satisfied just enough to warrant watching the next episode, and then forgetting it exists until you see
...
its name on your anime list. Not bad, not good, just completely serviceable in what it was putting out.
Solid animation, cute girls, cute girls wearing bikini's, cute girls in bikini's playing fuckin' volleyball. I went in expecting cute girls playing volleyball, I left satisfied.

Keijo is an anime about things that matter. It’s about things that matter to you, things that matter to me. Things that matter to the whole fucking world. Keijo is not simply fanservice. No. It is more than that. Keijo is about life itself. To understand this statement you must first understand the correct answer to the question “tits or ass”. While there does seem to be some debate that in itself is appalling. The answer, without a fucking doubt, should be ass. Why? A baby can live without sucking its mothers teat but can it exist without an ass? No. Of course it couldn’t.
...
The ass is important to humanity because it is humanity. Without ass there is no you, no me, no anyone. And thus we arrive a the importance of ass. While ass represents life, tits represent nurture. Both are essential to successfully raise a child. So you are asking me if a show that features the power and beauty of the ass and tits is worth watching? I think you know the answer.
