"They say what you do in life is reflected in the after-life; for Yusuke Urameshi, is both a blessing and a curse." This couldn't be any more true for Yusuke as, one day, he makes the selfless sacrifice of risking his own life for the sake of another and, given his track record, the spirit world doesn't know what to classify him as since an event like that for someone of his status is extremely unlike, so he is given the opportunity for a second chance in his life ordeal.
For a lot of Yu Yu Hakusho, it's very action-oriented and that may set you off,
...
but the good news regarding that is the overall blend of story mixed in with the overall action that kept me going. In regards to the story, it is great and keeps you entertained all the way through, but at no time is it more present than in the final arc, much unlike most action series where the final arc is just more action with even less story than the previous. Story - 9/10.
You can tell that it's partially inspired by Dragon Ball Z, but it's far superior in terms of story/plot and is much more balanced in terms of humor & action. The artwork/animation meets the standard for it's time, but the creator got sick towards the end of the story and the last editions of the manga are somewhat lacking & forced. In the Dark Tournament arc, it has a few fighting scenes that are pretty bad, but I believe only 1 of them is essential to the main plot. I find that the artwork/animation is still tolerable - 7/10 artwork.
It has the typical cliches, but nothing unexpected that's too horrible. Character development is exceedingly great throughout the story and, as you go on, you learn more about each character, most prominently & abundantly in the last arc. This series has produced my favorite character in anime & the character/connection development will keep you hooked and equalizes itself greatly throughout the entire series.
Contrary to what many who haven't watched Yu Yu Hakusho may think, it is anything but a DBZ clone. Of course, there are some moments reminiscent of DBZ, but the story has no connections whatsoever and the action isn't dragged on forever without any new story. For each fight they have, a new story comes along with it and you don't find that in DBZ, though you could see why they are similar.
I couldn't recognize any plot inconsistencies in the anime as everything pretty much coped and is explained within the series. For those who prefer story over action, the last or third arc may be your favorite though it goes much more into detail with action than does the manga. For those who are more likely to enjoy a series for action, the second arc will probably be your favorite. Neither of those are to say that they don't mix story with action or vice versa in one specific arc, since without one, the other would suffer.
I enjoyed the series as much, if not more than my all-time favorite anime, Dragon Ball & I connected and was more interested with every new story or new villain that the crew faced. I recommend this anime to any action-oriented fan as it meets your typical shounen needs & much, much more for some.
