Tokyo Ghoul is a Shonen-Seinen/Dark Shonen that everyone knows the premise of by now (similar to SAO), Ken Kaneki is a university student living in a world where a population of man-eating monsters called Ghouls exist hiding within human society only for him to be attacked by his date (who was a Ghoul) and made into a half-Ghoul through the life saving surgery to save his life. If you live within the anime/manga community, you know the story… but to know the full story, READ THE MANGA!!!

Shonen-Seinen/Dark Shonens ever put to paper. After finishing this manga, I now understand why manga fans were so furious with even Season 1 of the anime and root A… this is truly one of the best mangas I’ve ever read.
Apparently this needs more information so I guess I’ll ramble on about everything I liked. Firstly, the art is stellar but that much can be gleamed from looking at any page or cover in this series, however the best pages and panels of art in this manga come from the way they perfectly depict the characters mental states in such an abstractly beautiful yet grotesque way. There’s also the character work. Kaneki in the manga is literally one of the best written protagonists in manga due to just how introspective Sui Ishida actually goes out of his way to visually depict. All of the supporting characters are thoroughly thought out and have their own place in the world with thousands of dynamics and connections branching out from them to create a more holistic view of each of these characters. The more you read, the more you learn, the more you don’t particularly hate anyone in this world as you see the environment, the people, the events and the perspective that birthed them. One thing I have to say is that the manga does directly lead into :re, but if you don’t like :re and want to pretend the series ended with this series… there’s enough finality to the way this story brutally wraps up that you could just enjoy it as an isolated masterpiece.
When I get time, I’ll be diving into Tokyo Ghoul :re so I can make my own mind up on it but the original Tokyo Ghoul run will always be a classic in my mind.
