I generally don't write reviews, but this show honestly earned one.
G-Witch is very peculiar for a Gundam show. This is a franchise where the meat of the story is dedicated to the conflict between opposing factions. Or in short - war. G-Witch features no war, but instead.... it's a school anime. I honestly don't know what is it with Okouchi and schools, but every single mecha anime of his has to have a school as an important part of the setting. It was done in Code Geass, it was done in Valvrave the Liberator and it is done, yet again, in G-Witch.
To start with
...
the good things: The show's mecha designs are exquisite. Besides returning names Kanetaka Ebikawa (Gundam 00) and Ippei Gyoubu (Gundam IBO), the show brings in JNTHED of Metal Gear fame and Wataru Inata who did Armored Core and Xenogears designs. The four differing "factions" all have highly distinct designs. The Aerial is a very nice design, but others such as the Pharact, the Dilanzas, the Darlibalde and the Michaelis are also very good.
The fights are good, as is to be expected from a Gundam series.
The non-school parts are the highlights of the show, given they show the world of corporate manipulations. Delling is a fairly decent antagonistic figure, as is Vim Jeturk. I won't go into much detail other than they don't really feature much, especially in the first 6-7 episodes. They do eventually interact with the main cast in a scene that I would call... very expected from Okouchi. It's a twist that comes from a mile away. Again, very similar to his tactics in Code Geass, except Geass made them work because the anime obviously didn't care about taking itself seriously.
Regarding the main cast, I must say I liked Guel, Chuchu, Nika and to an extent Elan and his clones. Everyone else I either didn't care for or outright hated.
Can't and won't judge Shaddiq right now, given he's shaping up to be a main villain, however he doesn't do a whole lot until the very last few episdes.
Now onto the bad things...
Suletta SUCKS as a protagonist. There, I said it. Her stuttering is super annoying (and no it DOES NOT improve over time), her behaviour doesn't improve over time either... the show literally keeps her as a vehicle for incredibly poor attempts at humor and NOTHING ELSE. Yeah, sorry Okouchi, this is not Meme Geass where you can just go all out with a memey protagonist. Episode 12 does have a pretty good stinger scene where Suletta literally crushes a man and stays smiling.... hm, now that I think, that sounds like some serious schizophrenia.
Miorine is the bland serious type, and not much else. Nurtures tomatoes... for some god knows what reason. Maybe she's trying to learn how to preserve things, I don't know. Her scenes as the CEO of Gund-Arm show she doesn't change as a person AT ALL.
To say nothing of the yuribait between Suletta and Miorine - it's garbage. Go watch a show that's labeled with the yuri tag, you're not finding any of that here.
Worst of all, given that the show mostly focuses around those two, the entertainment value seriously goes down the drain given how unlikable those two are. Most of the scenes they're on screen together are a PAIN to watch. And no, meme traits do not make a likeable character.
Personal opinions:
The music is just generic. I don't like the OP (sorry YOASOBI fans, this kind of music just doesn't jive with me personally), the ED is okay but overall not really a memorable song.
The character designs are just okay.
Conclusion:
G-Witch tries and miserably fails to be a show for a wide audience. Mecha fans won't like the lack of intrigue typically associated with Gundam. Yuri fans won't like the lack of lesbianism (seriously, go read or watch something that has the actual yuri/girls love tag and, y'know, genuine lesbians). Everybody else just won't care, and they already seem to not be caring.
If you do want to watch a good Gundam show, do yourself a favor and watch any of the following: 0079, Zeta, G, X, Turn A, 00. Or any of the OVAs not named Gundam Unicorn.
