The charm of these shows are that they are "sports" genre, but have a slice of life element which enlivens the story through how the protagonists interact with the supporting cast. In each of these shows, the supporting cast and their interactions with the main cast are endearing, emotional, and heart-warming. Both of these anime use a sport as a method of overcoming personal weaknesses. Each show combats some heavier themes, but Chihayafuru takes an overall lighter theme than 3-gatsu; however, the overall emotional impact of either shows is still strong. The climb to the top with both protagonists is a fun ride to go through!
