Both mediums tell the tale of mischief and trickery through the lives of the tanuki. It also entails themes of survival within cultural change, how they attempt to get by with their old tactics amongst the modern people. The movie expands more on that theme, and the TV show's first episode uses it to set the vibe, giving our MC that motivation from that point onward.

Although one is a two-part movie and the other is a 12-episode anime, both carry charming themes of a love story between two dynamic people. They both persevere through the times during the Taisho Era, which is certainly an interesting timeline to explore. Overall very lighthearted and fun to watch for both of them!

I'm surprised that no one has made connections between these two shows! Both directed by Hiroko Utsumi (who also directed Free!), both shows have two male protagonists that share instant connections and strong emotional bonds, holding dynamic personalities with each other and the people around them. Yet their strong bonds are put to the test with internal and external forces that makes us root for the success of our lovable duos. With a good balance between their comedy and drama, it's enough for all of us watchers to share the joys and pains alongside our favorite characters.

Both main protagonists involuntary team up with second main protagonists who are skillfully better than them, and are thrown into a bigger world of crime. Whether it’d be having an unlimited financial balance or expert con-artists skills (or maybe both), their dynamic personalities will soon create a special bond that’ll surely make a name for themselves in their action-packed worlds.
