This manga is at its best when it's a slice of life/comedy. The characters are really enjoyable. Watching them get into whatever situations around the house is usually pretty entertaining. There are even some great side characters, but they don't get used nearly as often as I'd like. Which is probably a byproduct of the other side of Yozakura Family.
Being a Shonen, I suppose it couldn't help itself from being your classic action series sometimes. Early on, when the action stuff would only last for about 2 or 3 chapters at a time it wasn't bad. But later down the line an overarching plot starts
...
forming, but so do the cracks in the story.
The "powers" the characters use to fight aren't well explained. Which is fine for a slice of life where the powers are just used for comedy's sake, but when legitimate action is being considered, what Yozakura family does isn't cutting it.
There's also a big stakes problem. At one point we reach a time where the next big bad is always bigger and badder than the last, with no real explanation.
I like Yozakura family, but a lot of these Slice of Life chapters have the same structure.
1. Funny out of context situation
2. Flashback to what caused the situation
3. Wacky hijinks back in the present
4. Touching character moment
5. End of chapter punchline
Like I said, this series is at it's best when it's a slice of life, which I believe is also a majority of the chapters. However between the action chapters and the haphazard way that some of the slice of life ones are put together, I hesitate to call this series anything more than slightly above decent.
