To be perfectly honest this is not that great a story. It's very strange that score is higher than the author's later show Shinmai Maou no Testament.
The Male MC is pretty much a Mary Sue. He has no real character progression. He has Goku like power right from the beginning. And in only one spot in the entire 12 episodes was he even hurt.
The female characters were, unfortunately, only there so that he could protect them. This is a contrast from Shinmai Maou no Testament where is of the female leads actually had skills that were needed and contributed to

The biggest issue I had with this remake is that most of the main cast got redrawn slightly goofy. As if this was a Saturday morning cartoon like Tiny Toons.
This very noticeable in how the hair and eyes are drawn for all the characters. Hair that used to have dimension is now just someone doing a flood fill in MS Paint. Rias' and Akeno's hair no long flows they might as well be hard plastic wigs. Heck Rias' hair is no longer crimson, it's just fire engine red. Once silver hair is now dull light gray. I never expected a sports anime to be so damn good.
The concept should never have been more than just a reason to animate busts and butts. And it somehow pulls out one of the best fighting stories I've watched. I've also not laughed this hard in a while, all the puns and callbacks to various other anime for special attack names. This has been one of the very few anime I've watched where they've integrated several regional accents and not just the one girl who's only job is comic relief.
