Everything up till the last few moments were great but the writer has introduced twist for twist's sake. All I got from that ending was that genocide was justifiable which is in my view, a very dangerous take to have.
Spoilers:
The writer has attempted to redeem the protagonist Eren but this is done in extremely poor taste. Somehow in the writer's mind, wiping out 80% of the human population was a necessity and the right thing to do because humans are such savage creatures that will fight each other if left alone. Yet somehow the 20% who survive now hold each other's hands in peace.
...
Eren is glorified by the cast of characters. Even Pieck who previously hated Eren glorifies him which I do not find credible. We as the audience know that to enjoy a story, we must willingly believe in imaginary characters as if they were real, react to fictional events as real. However, dialogue like this call attention to the writing as writing and therefore shatter the illusion.
The whole Ymir wanting to see Mikasa kiss a decapitated Eren as a show of "love" is also done in such poor taste. There must be a reason deeper than simple superficial "love" when one willingly enslaves oneself for 2000 years. Witnessing someone kiss a decapitated head is not one. This feels like the writer's attempt to tie up a loose end which I also do not find credible.
All in all, what a terrible ending for what could be a great series. How anyone can think Eren is a hero needs actual intervention.
