I'm gonna start my review by saying I've only watched the anime and didn't read the manga. I just looked up top ten horror anime on Youtube and decided to give it a shot after a few months of not being able to watch anime due to work and school. Anyways!! The storyline was very original I doubt you'll find another anime remotely close to it. In the first episode you're shown a normal happy orphanage but BOOM plot twist it's actually a facility where children are raised to believe they'll be adopted only to get eaten by demons/monsters. From there it's
...
battle of the wits between the "mom" and five children who plan to escape. It is exciting and every episode kept me on the edge of my seat. However, there was only one thing that didn't make any sense to me. Now again I only watched the show so perhaps there's more information in the manga. But, in the show it appears that boys and girls ages six to twelve get "adopted" based on their grades and age. Girls can be referred by the "mom" of the house to someone who is known as "grandma". This grandma appears to be behind the scenes on the business and can train girls into being "moms". The process after that is after training it appears that the now women who are done their training must get pregnant then raise a bunch of orphans including their own child at this orphanage. However this process is only possible for girls, boys appear to just get eaten. So the burning question that scorches a hole in the plot to me was "How do these women get pregnant?" Yes there's such thing as artificial insemination but even then where does the sperm come from if there is no male adults?? The human species can't reproduce asexually so how is that possible?? And where do the other children come from?? I'm sure I didn't fall asleep and missed something because like I said this show was very exciting and every episode kept me on the edge of my seat. Perhaps there's more details on it in the manga or perhaps details will be shown in the second season that is coming out next year. For now I'm left wondering about that.
The characters in this show to me I thought were a bit static. A big one for me that didn't really appear to show any significant change was Emma. She was reckless and naive from start to finish, though still likeable. Norman was was portrayed as a very intelligent and very capable child up until he got "adopted" The only character Isabella, the"mom" of the orphanage seemed to be the only dynamic character in the show. To me she seemed to be portrayed as the caretaker and a smart and srongwilled gaurd of the orphanage. She's seen to be very against the children escaping and tries everything can to stop them, while still being discreet. However in the end when the children have escaped and she's looking at them from the top of the wall she suddenly developed a change of heart and wished them well. Which to me kinda seemed rushed and kinda lazy.
Overall though despite that I thought it was a good show and really enjoyed it. It had it's good qualities to such as, action and crazy plot twits in every episode and it's bits of comic relief. None of the characters were unlikeable and despite the plot hole it was still a great show. I'm sure once season two is out it'll redeem the rest of the story and characters
