A dramatic improvement from the original 2012 anime (and by proxy, the 2002 novel). I didn't understand how the 15-year-old me got so hooked on the show, but this movie reminded me of why. The animation and soundtrack did a brilliant job illustrating just how hard each character fought - when I saw both Kirito and Asuna run towards the first boss I almost wanted to run as well, as if the action sequence was giving me adrenaline.

Studio Trigger's animation never misses. When I binge-watched this with my girlfriend, I thought that this was the best anime I've seen this decade. Looking back at it now, there are a few bugs and glitches that this cyberpunk adventure didn't patch out. The anime gives off the illusion of an original, well-written story with three-dimensional characters, but in reality it takes too much from Johnny Silverhand's story in Cyberpunk 2077.
