Because MAL does not allow to recommend LNs or Manga on the basis of Anime, I will use this comment to do so. But my first recommendation is concerning MM – Steins;Gate. This is based less on similarity in terms of story or setting, but more on the feelings that arise as the plot unfolds. As MM only lasts 12 episodes – compared to the 24 of SG – the transition from light-hearted to terrifying feels much more sudden and due to the setting also more extreme. Nonetheless, I watched SG first and could not help but notice how likewise both anime were in terms of this specific change. Even if you don’t like certain characteristics, like the fan service in SG or the Magical Girl setting in MM, like I did, you will most likely enjoy one if you are fond of the other. Having said this, the “real” recommendation I want to give her is, if you have watched SG or MM (or both), one of my favorite LNs, The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria. It shows so much resemblance to both Anime, but I was really starting to feel intrigued/reminded while watching the last few episodes of MM. I will not go into any detail here, as that would, in my opinion, spoil a lot of the fun. So, even if you’re not into reading, I guarantee you that you will like this Light Novel series. The story is finished, so you don’t have to wait for further volumes. Read it, you’ll have fun (or something like that)!

If Welcome to the NHK appealed to you, so will, most likely, Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE). At first glance, it might look like both anime don't have that much in common, but they really do. While NHK shows how Sato's shut-in lifestyle leads to depression, anxiety and borderline insanity, NGE takes a different approach, but beneath this the topics stay the same. The way the portagonist Shinji and the other EVA kids are essentially forced in the whole situation preludes the dark and sombre climax and overall theme. Misaki's and Sato's relationship is, at some points, very similar to the one between Shinji and Asuka. In both, the feelings of self-hatred, angst and despair, the grim look ahead, and especially in NGE, the past experiences and strained relationships, play a vital role and find display in some of the most grieving moments of the shows. NGE offers a completely different setting, but it deals with the same feelings and emotions that are depicted by NHK, albeit with a somewhat more violent and surreal touch.
