In 2008 Isao Takahata, best known for his work “Grave of the Fireflies”, announced that he started working on a new full-length movie and in November 2013, after 5 years of production “Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari” (The tale of princess Kaguya) came out.
“Kaguya-hime no Monogatari” is an adaptation of the Japanese folktale “The tale of the bamboo cutter” (also known as “Princess Kaguya”).
STORY:
The tale is quite popular; the story can be divided in 3 sections: beginning, life in the capital and the ending.
In the beginning the story follows a bamboo cutter named Okina that one day found an infant the size of his thumb
...
inside a shining bamboo shoot. With his wife they decided to raise her as their own child.
This part of the story feature the growth of Kaguya-hime her early relationship and build up her character. The story to this point is lighthearted perfectly representing the life of an infant.
During the life in the capital the character of kaguya-hime matured and the story starts to go down a darker path. Kaguya is faced with restriction of liberty but thanks to the story of the five princes the mood is lighten.
I don’t want to spoil the ending but I need to point out a few things. After the introduction of the Emperor of Japan as a character the movie start to build up its emotional ending but is not the real ending of the story.
The original tale ends with the naming of Mount Fuji and the destruction of the elixir of immortality (both of this are not even mentioned in the anime so it’s not a real spoiler). I wanted to mention it because this is an adaptation and this decision influence the characters especially the Emperor, basically in the movie he is relegated to a secondary character who “breaks” Kaguya-hime, while in the original story he becomes the protagonist reinforcing the importance of Kaguya’s character.
This decision doesn’t really influence the quality of the anime Isao decided to end at a good point of the story and it feels completed but I personally think that it’s important to mention.
CHARCTERS:
The main character obviously is Kaguya and every other character supports her growth. Kaguya’s character is fully built in the movie from the start to the end it evolves based on the encounters and the environment.
That said the supporting characters aren’t really stereotypes every character has his evolution and help the story flow. In some cases, like the princes, the characters help to lighten the mood.
ART & ANIMATION:
The art style is not your usual anime style. This type of art resembles the one used in old children’s books with a mix of pastel and watercolors.
At first the heavy outline on the characters can be slightly annoying but after the first 20 minutes you will get used to it.
The lack of detail on the character does not impact on the beauty of the art even in the few occasions when the drawing reverts to a sketch. The backgrounds have enough details and for the most part use less saturated colors that let the characters stand out.
Due to the art style the animation feels choppy at times but enables some beautiful moments like the escape from the palace during the party, in my opinion without the use of that particular art style you will never achieve the impact of that scene.
SOUND:
As per Studio Ghibli’s tradition the man behind the music of “Kaguya-hime no monogatari” is Joe Hisaishi, but this is not the best compared to other ones that he made. With that said this is still a fitting soundtrack and it’s pleasant to hear even as a standalone playlist.
A few notes on the voice actors.
Kaguya’s voice actor (Aki Asakura) is an actress and this was her first time dubbing, she did a very good job with changing the tone of her voice to distinguish the various phases of Kaguya’s growth (that’s not a quality that many voice actor have).
Okina’s voice actor (Chii Takeo) was a famous actor and this was his second (and last) dubbing experience, unfortunately he died in June of 2012. His interpretation of the character was almost perfect expressing the nature of Kaguya’s father.
ENJOYMENT:
Personally I liked the film, first I was skeptical about the art style but it turned out to be good.
The movie itself is a roller coaster of emotion from joy to sadness and everything is expressed perfectly with the combination of images and voice actors.
OVERALL:
I will recommend this movie to everyone young and old (like every other studio Ghibli’s film), even for people who don’t watch anime this is a great film.
I think that in the future I will definitely remember “Kaguya-hime no monogatari” for its art style and less for the story.
It’s good to see Isao Takahata back with a movie almost as good as “Grave of the Fireflies” and I hope to see many other of his works.

Fireball Charming is a memorable series of 13 shorts of almost 2 minutes each. The anime was created by Jinni’s Animation Studios in collaboration with Disney Japan and aired in 2011.
Actually this is not the first time that this happens; in fact in 2008 the same collaboration produced Fireball a series of shorts that is the sequel of Fireball Charming.
STORY: 7
At this point in a normal review you will get at least a synopsis of the plot, the problem here is that said plot doesn’t really exist. Although in both Fireball and Fireball Charming some context is provided...
Fireball Charming is set in a distant
...
future where robots and humans are at war with each other and feature the duchess Drossel von Flügel a female humanoid robot and Gedächtnis a robot that is her servant and guardian. The characters never leave the huge mansion where they live so you will rarely see the outside.
As I said before there is no real plot, the episodes are small random comedy skits that are well thought and beautifully executed.
I will assure you that you will laugh at some of the jokes.
ART & ANIMATION: 10
Fireball Charming is entirely done using CGI like its predecessor Fireball. Anime that are 100% CGI are rarely good and this one is an example of that small group.
In 2011 this was probably the best 3D anime produced with Cat Shit One as a close second, and even for today standards Fireball Charming is a beautiful anime.
If you focus on the graphics and animations you will note a lot of minute details in the 3D models, especially notable on Drossel, such as the arms and legs joints that accurately modeled and move appropriately based on the pose.
Drossel’s random gestures are hypnotizing to watch thanks to beautiful animations and help accentuating the feel that the robot is alive.
SOUND: 7
The music in the anime good, but it’s nothing special in my opinion. The sound effects on the robot movements are good and noticeable. The voice acting is spot on, to get characters that feel alive you need: good voice acting, good animation and art and an interesting personality so far we are two out of three.
CHARCTERS: 8
Finally the characters, probably the most important part of this anime, as said before we have two main characters lets start analyze Drossel first.
You can think of Drossel as the star of the show, she act like a spoiled princess that does what she wants. Usually she runs the gags and sometimes she seems aware of the viewer. Even if she doesn’t speak her character is characterize by random movements and strange poses.
Gedächtnis is the servant and guardian that acts like an older person and tries to contain Drossel, without him some of the jokes would not exist.
ENJOYMENT: 9
The jokes are good and easy to laugh at, since the episodes are short it’s almost impossible to grow tired of the characters and after the last episode you will probably want more.
OVERALL: 8
In my opinion this is a must watch, if you are not sure look at it this way, even if you don’t like it you will not “waste” a lot of time, so I will recommend to watch it.
On a final in my opinion you should watch Fireball Charming first and then Fireball because in the chronological order you will miss additional quotes that at first (in Fireball) don’t make sense.

“Other Worlds” and “She and her cat” are Makoto Shinkai’s first works and his starting points in the anime industry. In particular “Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko” (“She and her cat”) raise his popularity and made him reach first place in 12th DoGA CG-animation contest.
This five minutes animation feature the relationship between a cat, Chobi and his owner, “She”.
The story, told from the cat's perspective, cover a year of his life, from the moment of their encounter to the next spring.
The beautiful writing of the short story let you enjoy every second of the five minutes. From the words of the cat you can understand
...
his feelings and immerse yourself in his story.
In five minutes is almost impossible to define strong characters, but in this case we have “She”, Chobi’s owner, that through the cat’s word gets described and it’s not easy to forget, even if her name is a mystery. In general Chobi and “She” aren’t anonymous character you actually come to care about them.
Mimi (Chobi’s cat girlfriend) is only a side character that helps with the flow of the story and its emotional impact.
Just on a side note I think that Shinkai’s weakness are the characters and I find funny that the characters in “She and her cat” are better that the ones in some of his other movies.
The animations and CGs are beautiful in their simplicity, also the choice of using black and white helps to create the right mood for the story.
The music is nice; this soundtrack is Tenmon’s first piece for an anime.
In the end I will recommend the vision of this OVA to everyone, if you haven’t seen it go and watch it immediately it’s only five minutes and you will never regret seeing it.
And only one final word:
"This world, I think we like it."

Ryo is one of the four anime from Anime Mirai 2013 (Young animator training project).
I'm going ahead and say that this short is probably one of the worst of the Anime Mirai’s shorts, but lest start with the actual review.
The story itself is a little strange and quite difficult to understand, from what I read and from the title the story should focus around a boy, who lost his parents, who is given the name Ryo by Ryoma Sakamoto.
He then follows Sakamoto as his bodyguard during his journey to revolutionize Japan.
As for what I saw the story put Ryo on the side and take Ryoma
...
Sakamoto as the main character and managed to never explicitly tell what he did.
After the first time I’ve watched Ryo I searched for Ryoma Sakamoto and read everything I could, then I’ve rewatched it and I have to say that I enjoyed it a little bit more than the first time.
I see this anime as recap of a 13 episode series, if you watched the entire episode you have an idea of what is going on otherwise you can’t understand anything, and since the series doesn’t exist you are screw.
The characters are practically non-existent, the “main character” Ryo does not have a personality after seeing the anime you know nothing about him.
Ryoma Sakamoto and his wife really existed and I think they are portrait really nicely in the anime, there are some touches that made you recollect their actual life, and they are probably the only comedy elements in all of the anime.
The only other character that I should mention is Ryo’s brother that is introduced in the start of the anime and then forgot until the end.
The sounds are nice, the music is nothing spectacular but it is good, the only issue that I had was that, in some points, the voice of the character that was talking was covered by the background sounds, but I hope that that was a problem on my end and not on the anime itself.
The animation is good but absolutely not on par with “Little Witch Academia” or “Death Billiard”, the backgrounds are particularly well done even if they don’t have a lot of details.
Overall this is an average anime, it’s only one episode so you can probably watch it anyway, I strongly recommend reading about Ryoma Sakamoto before watching Ryo, and this should mitigate the negative aspects of the story.
On a side note I'm not really good when I have to write a review so if you have any advices feel free to contact me. I'm always open to criticism.

I'm sure most of the people who read this are familiar with the quote "Don't judge a book by its cover", well this manga will remember you the literal meaning of the quote xD
If you read this review and you didn't read the manga you probably won’t understand what I mean, so to be more clear first of all go and see some covers of the volumes of Franken Fran and then come back and keep on reading :D
Enough joking around and let’s start the real review:
First of all this review is based on the complete 61 chapters manga, I will attempt to avoid every
...
spoiler.
Franken Fran is an horror manga with a nice touch of comedy, the manga covers the story of Fran a "girl" that resembles the Frankenstein’s monster with electrodes at each side of her head, she is in charge of the laboratory that Dr. Madaraki Naomitsu (her "father") left to her while he is traveling.
In every chapter she will handle different clients of the laboratory performing almost anything (raise the dead, switch heads and bodies etc...).
Also the chapters seem to cover different themes, such as love, religion, plastic surgery and justice in a strange and unique way combining horror, with a lot of guru, and comedy, with hilarious sceneries.
The stronger points of this manga are the characters and their personalities.
As said before Fran is the protagonist, a funny and easy-going girl that even in the more disturbing scenes will put a smile on your face.
Fran also during the manga will discover to have 2 sisters (other 2 creation of Madaraki), one of them Veronica is an assassin and the other one, Gavrill, is the boss of a gang, both of them will have some chapters where they are the protagonist adding more comedy elements to the manga... I will not say more because they appear late in the manga so I won’t spoil anything.
Frank has also two assistants: Okita, who has the head of a man and the body of a cat and Adorea, a beautiful woman wrapped entirely in bandages.
The graphic style in the first chapter it's a little bit old and messy, but it has a lot of details and in this case (remember it's a horror manga) it's very well appreciated changes. After the first chapter (that is the oneshot that come out before the manga) the style changes a bit, it doesn't feel old and it's simpler while maintaining all the details.
In conclusion all you need to know is that this manga is a must read to all who love horrors.
I think that if you read the first two chapters you will love the series and will keep on reading it (or you will hate it, there is no other choice).
