Having seen Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san twice recently, I wanted to find something to re-watch instead to fill that void. The conditions were slice of life, released 2017-present and of course, that it be good. Of the options presented to me which met those conditions, Machikado Mazoku is the one I feel best pairs with Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san. It has a similar style of humour but is different enough to be viable in conjunction.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san is probably the most similar anime to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya which exists. It's not even close a perfect match, but it's as good as we're going to get.

They're both escapist wish fulfillment anime. The enjoyment comes from the satisfaction of watching someone OP be OP. I'll definitely say that No Game No Life accomplishes this better, as at times SAO can't decide whether to be an escapist wish fulfillment anime or a poorly made serious fantasy drama but when it is trying to be an escapist wish fulfillment anime, it does so quite well.

Koe no Katachi

This recommendation isn't to say that you'll enjoy Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso if you liked Koe no Katachi, but if you liked Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, it's very likely you'll like Koe no Katachi. Describing why this is the case is difficult. Too difficult In both this cases I recommend the sub, although the english dubs of both are also very well made. The issue is that the translations are too literal for Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso and too loose for Koe no Katachi.

Mahoutsukai no Yome and Houseki no Kuni both explore themes of guilt and existentialism. However, they explore them in different ways, which is ultimately why this recommendation is so consequential. If you enjoyed Houseki no Kuni, you likely won't enjoy something that treads the same ground, but instead you'd probably enjoy something that approaches it in a new way.

This is a bit of an odd recommendation for me to make. The reason I'm making it is simple, I have only ever liked two anime for their plot. Steins;gate and Houseki no Kuni. That is the reason I'm making this recommendation, because they're the only two anime for which the plot is strong enough to hold them up (I also want to dethrone Shinsekai Yori from the top recommendations related to Houseki no Kuni) BTW: These are two of the only three anime I'd recommend against dropping at all costs. Even if you're not particularly enjoying these, you can't get the full picture without finishing them.

Net-juu no Susume

I consider the style of comedy in this to be very similar. The comedy is derived less from the content of the joke, than it is from the execution (Timing, voice acting and facial expressions) BTW: I recommend the dub for both, although I especially do in the case of Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun (It's one of my top dub recommendations, because the sub isn't funny. I suspect it's the same for Net-juu no Susume but I can't know for sure)

Both are very personal drama's, that give the viewer credit to infer and which focus on the protagonists emotional turmoil. There isn't a shred of doubt in my mind that 3-gatsu no Lion is the most similar anime to Koe no Katachi in existence. Trust me, I've seen everything considered even remotely similar. BTW: Koe no Katachi - Definitely watch it subbed 3-gatsu no Lion - Preferably watch it dubbed
