The main character is pretty self explanatory. He hates goblins and doesn't care about anything else. Is the town being attacked by a dragon? Too bad. There are goblins to be slayed. Is your kingdom at war with a neighboring kingdom? Too bad. There are goblins to be slayed.

A lot of people complain about this show's apparent lack of story, but they simply cannot appreciate the complexity of it.
There is a whole chain of events going on in the world but goblin slayer keeps on killing goblins, no matter what happens to the world. While most anime put the main characters right in the heart of the main events, goblin slayer tells the story from a completely alienated point of view. Every once in a while the main characters feel the effects of world events, but they just keep killing goblins despite them.
