Feeling very mixed on this one, tbh. I've never had any contact with the cyberpunk 2077 sphere, never played the games and never really knew anything about it except for its existence. But I'd heard good things about this series and it looked fun so I wanted to check it out.
Art 9/10.
This looks great, it has a very distinct style, the fights are fluid and fun, the character designs are all interesting and unique so you can recognize each of the important characters by their silhouette alone. Only 9 out of 10 because I didn't like the design for the cyberpsychosis and that
...
sometimes really took me out.
Sound 7/10.
The sound design is solid but nothing to write home about. Nothing really stuck out neither in a positive nor negative way. It is a bit of a missed opportunity since the rest of the show is so stylized to not have a more distinctive soundtrack but at least it isn't offensively bad. What lifted this up to a 7/10 was actually the dub - I switched over to the dubbed version about halfway through the series because the subtitles kept distracting me. There were multiple instances where the subtitles were horribly timed, chunks of a sentence or conversation being on screen for barely a second and the absence of actual subtitles whenever text was on screen (like in the "phone calls" for example) was confusing. However, the dub is really good. Some VAs are better than others, as always, and some of the slang (that I'm guessing originates from the games?) felt really unnatural but all in all they did a very good job and the language and vibe felt very appropriate for the setting.
Plot 5/10.
I'm not even mad about this one. It's a Trigger show so I knew what I was getting into - great visuals and basic plot at best. And I would say that's what they delivered. The plot is absolutely average, nothing deep or complex but they did some solid (albeit blatant) worldbuilding, were actually setting up plot points multiple episodes before they came into play and didn't have any super glaring plot holes at the end.
Characters 3.5/10.
This one really annoyed me. It wasn't so bad at the beginning but the further along this show went, the worse it got. Characters started to make more and more choices going exactly against what had been established about them before without that change ever being adressed or explained, which just makes you question whether you know those characters at all. And that becomes a problem not much later when these characters start to make the objectively stupidest decisions. Obviously they do that for emotional reasons, they're still human after all, so they don't always take the most logical path. But that kind of writing requires you to feel for those characters so you can at least understand their choices on an emotional level and this kind of understandig of the characters was just not established enough to work.
(Sidenote: All of this does not apply to Rebecca, she is perfect the way she is and was my highlight throughout.)
So yeah, all in all an okay Trigger show, I guess. It really delivered on the style and had some sufficient plot going on but really suffered from its character writing. If you're just in it for the fun action you'll probably have a blast but if you're at all sensitive to stupid character moves, maybe stay out of this one.
