Throw some nice ambient, some great op/ed themes, very nice art, an interesting and somewhat original story, mix them together...
It usually doesn't always end up well. Because integrity is needed.
Well, this anime, two episodes OVA, has very nice sounds and ambiance music, touching ed themes, an art that is catchy (even by today's standards) and a story that is very, very intriguing.
Firstly, it is not a shounen where high school kids go for their so-called romance. It is not an 'bleeding-edge' science-fiction either. It is something that can, though unlikely, happen in daily life. This makes it better, because characters are not so deep with
...
some great resolve or aim, which would make them shallow otherwise. However, they fit in, they feel real. Therefore, it has integrity.
Secondly, although the story is not a masterpiece, it is not a usual slice of life either. The way it is presented, yes, looks and feels like a slice of life, but the core is not. I would think it would dissolve integrity and introduce plot holes, but it is quite the contrary. Starting with serial killers just like Mirai Nikki, it resolves rather modest and satisfying. Not a sharp taste, a soft taste indeed. Talking more about it will spoil, so I will just stop here.
Finally, the art deserves an applause. Animations are great, scenery is great, facial expressions are particularly great. It is not stylistic, which makes it better for the overall presentation. Voice acting, on the other hand, could be a little better. Maybe they should've seen the facial expressions first, then voice it, but still, not an earsore.
I rate the sound 10 because it is not overwhelming. You do not realize it's there until you pay attention (developer ear here) and it just drags you into immersion.
Overall, don't waste your time with moe and shounen; watch this, enjoy, and up your standards. 2 episodes will be enough to feel satisfied. That's what makes this a gem.

This is a nice treat for all Resident Evil fans.
For those who are not familiar with Resident Evil games (no, not movies, they are completely irrelevant), this manga will not serve anything worthful.
Coming back, I've never believed that CapCom can make a really outstanding scenario, however Resident Evil always been a great series with all parts connecting to each other, completing a bigger picture.
This manga, taking a place in the canon story, with the debut of our new character Piers, is taking place before the events of Resident Evil 6, probably around same time of Resident Evil: Damnation.
Our test ground is now a high reputation
...
desolated school, having characters from within and outside with different and -unexpectedly interesting- personalities. Starting from a zombie schoolgirl, experienced professor comes to investigate, however he soon realizes that he is faced against something similar to T-Virus, but not entirely.
With nice drawings (I was actually surprised, wouldn't wanna see anime-ish Chris), and a story that is having a curve towards the last installments of the series, it is basically watching a gameplay of the game that you can't have. Those who played Resident Evil 6 will understand what I'm implying, so no spoilers here.
Do not expect a Ryukishi level scenario, after all it's Resident Evil and the deepest it can go is already given ten years ago. However, you can expect something not entirely action but a story and fright. Yeah, the feeling of desolation with monsters that are not easy to kill without being killed. Those shiny short-skirted high school girls are just a trap!

Now that is a single pearl, easy to miss and likely to be underrated.
Madhouse studios must be mad.
A short story of life and death, a story of human life and the illusion of equality. Could it be possible to compress into 25 minutes? Well, it seems it was.
On artistic-wise, visuals were appealing, if not gorgeous. Such details and great work for such a short story, with all the detailed background visuals were something that multiplied the joy.
For a one shot special anime, it would not be fair to judge characters, yet they were not half-baked personages either.
Death Pool (or Death Billards for that matter) uses
...
its visuals perfectly to tell the back story of the characters and their emotions. No need for long speeches and introductions.
Overall, a rare pearl to enjoy.

Urobuchi Gen broke my heart with Saya no Uta and make me addicted to his works. I have come to know him more, and I can say that he is a writer full of hatred.
And I can say that, Psycho-Pass is the most humane story of Urobuchi Gen.
Taking place in a not far future, a dystopian place, Psycho-Pass is a great criticism to human nature itself, both as individuals and community. It is interesting to see that these matters were not put in a subtle way, but a more direct way. It's so unlike Urobuchi Gen, but that is one of the few reasons to
...
make it his most humane story.
Solitude... Being part of a community... Allegedly given freedom... A future that is sealed even before the act takes place. Everything is decided for you and yet you still live a life that is yours. However, what will happen when the walls that are protecting you fall part? And maybe worst? It makes you to question. Were they made to keep the danger outside, or were they made to keep you inside? What will be the side you'll be taking when those walls fade?
Characters of Psycho-Pass touches almost everyone's life. Almost everyone can find something related to themselves in them. Obsession, parenthood, patriotism, humanism, idealism, solitude, search, a lesser evil, a greater good, an impossible choice, incomprehensible and unacceptable yet still undeniable facts... Nothing is up to you to decide, yet you have to make a choice. It is the very essence of Psycho-pass, desperation.
Every single character in this story suffers from it, and takes shape with it. It will be up to you to decide the good and evil... again.
Science fiction, action, detective... These may be the genres to describe Psycho-Pass, and it may look like it only speaks for a very specific part of viewers, but not only it fills those genres quite well, but also it speaks for other viewers too. If you are looking for something that makes sense, that you'll both enjoy and question paradigms while watching, Psycho-Pass is something you should never miss.
