Kaiju no.8 had an interesting premise . The Mc is a 30 year old hard working janitor in a world where Kaiju , giant monsters like Godzilla , Gamera and many other Tokusatsu icons that this manga pays homage to , run rampant and are taken down by the obligatory Defense Force . I thought that having the main character , who gets to transform into a monstorus hero , NOT being a part of the main organisation , and basically still being an underdog would be a breath of fresh air . But as soon as the second chapter passes , all that is

thrown out the window , and becomes one of the most generic shonen manga I have read . I am not kidding when I say every character besides Kafka and to an extent Reno is literally just every common anime character archetype you have ever seen . They are just not interesting . One thing I did like however was that one of the first villains was actually intimidating and charismatic , however that plotline ends just when it starts getting interesting . And the concept itself is literally just any Ultraman show , and being a fan of that , there is just nothing here that makes me raise an eyebrow , it has all been done to death . And I really wanted to like this manga , I even got to chapter 60 , but at that point I just let it go because I realised there is nothing else left to interest me .
As you see this review is mostly subjective , so yes , by technicality this manga is not BAD . I just don't find it interesting at all . I know people who love it , and honestly , that's great . Don't take some rando's words as gospel , if it grabs your eye go read it . I feel a 5/10 is fair . Average is the right word for this manga . Average at everything .

Style over substance .
This anime has a very by the numbers and generic story that , in concept , has nothing memorable or intriguing that has not be seen before . However what elevates this generic idea into something special is the gorgeous art , character designs and mind-blowing animation .
The english voice cast is amazing and really justify their roles with their amazing performances , Samuel L Jackson and Ron Pearlman especially
.The world this story takes place in is so weird yet stylish , that it instantly diminishes any kind of boredom you would find in the story itself . Seeing
...
a post apocalyptic yet feudal japan with a mixture of diverse races and cultures living together while also blending traditional with modern and even down-right futuristic is so awesome .
The soundtrack has that really nice rap/hiphop vibe to it that makes it good , although admittedly , not very memorable .
The artwork in this anime is absolutely phenomenal , with its dark colours and outrageous designs with their sharp edges and crazy weaponary . The animation is some of the most fluid animation i have seen recently and the bombastic set pieces where the action takes place had me in awe .
Overall , If you are looking for a real fun anime that just entertains non stop and doesn't require any thinking , this is for you !

I did not like Noa as a protagonist in the original ova . So naturally when i saw Asuma take the leading role in this one , i was excited because he is both charismatic and smart and it was fun seeing him solve a mystery using his strengths . However , at the last moments of the final act Noa takes the lead once again , and i would be dissapointed , however she proved to be a capable fighter and that was a pretty good way to end this film .
My god the christian symbolism , well this sure did pave the way
...
for Mamoru Oshii to direct Ghost In The Shell ... obviously ...

Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor is definately a compitent anime , and it does things good , but it scarcely excells at any of them . Nothing here is really noteworthy because it either feels like you have seen those things done before , or they feel really underwhelming in the execution .
The main idea for the story sounds really intriguing . A world where mecha are so common in everyday life , that crime specifically centered around these mecha called Labors naturally occurs , so a police force to combat those crimes with Labors of their own is formed . However there is little labor
...
crime for a show centered around it .
The first episode was a pretty straight forward introduction to this world and the characters . The second episode did not feaature any particularly exciting labor scene but it was okay . The third episode was a straight up Godzilla reference -which is entirely played for laughs- and it ends very anticlimactically , a very weird tonal shift for the show , and this early too ! The fourth episode I actually really liked for the message it tried to push and it really fit the show . Episodes 5 and 6 are a two parter that is everything i wanted from this show and it delivers ... up until it doesn't , because it ends so abruptly with no closure at all , leaving me dissapointed . The final episode is just okay .
The characters have good foundations , but i honestly cannot tell a single noteworthy thing about them , and besides Noa , i cannot remember any other name ... Pity , because throughout this short show you can see that they make a fun bunch and you just want to spend more time with them .
The art is very good even for its time . The labors are sleek and stylish , and i love that kind of mecha design . The animation tends to lean a bit on the static side of things , but most of the time and where there is action or intense character reactions happening , it is really fluid and stylish . It has that 80s anime edge that i am all in for .
The soundtrack is really rocking and i admire it for that . I wouldn't necessarily say it is memorable , however when you hear it you just can't help but bop your head . The oppening theme is okay , not the kind of music I would listen to , but not bad .
Overall , I would say that this anime , unfortunately is just wasted potential , and believe me , I say it with sadness , because I can see something working here , and I really want to cherish it , but i just can't . I hear there is a trilogy of movies that follow this OVA , so I hope I like those a lot more ...
