This manga is an extremely bizarre case, the likes of which I have never witnessed before in a piece of media.
Before we begin, the first ten chapters of this manga are absolutely stunning, very detailed backgrounds, an amazing gothic art style, nice character designs, good humor, and above all, a captivating story. Without talking too much about the first ten chapters, which you should read, let us see what went wrong.
First, a little bit of history. The author, Bota Mochito, was a hentai mangaka, publishing two works in 2015 and 2016, both of which look great in terms of the art, but the style doesn't

really match with Coffee Moon in my opinion. Then after four years Bota decides to write Coffee Moon, and has it publishing in Dengeki Maoh. A lot of things don't really add up to me, like how the art is completely trash after the first ten chapters, not to mention the worst plot fall off I've ever seen. The first ten chapters could easily be shipped as a complete story, but they were not. Chapters have been being published consistently since it was released, now we're about 4 months of radio silence. The paper it's in has nothing about it on their page other than in 2020 where Coffee Moon held a cover. I could just be unable to browse, since I don't know Japanese. I could not find any mention of Coffee Moon on their website unless searched for. To add to that, the author's twitter is just retweets of other hentai mangaka posting their porn, and retweets of old news and promotional material relating to Coffee Moon. I could not find an actual message from the author on their twitter.
This means that two things likely happened. The author finished the first ten chapters and from their own hubris, wanted to keep going with meaningless drivel. I want to give the benefit of the doubt, so I don't think that is what happened. The other possibility, is that the editors, whomever they may be, saw potential in the manga and wanted more out of it. Which I also don't get, because this manga is practically radio silent on all media outlets I've looked on, which could also be a result of not being able to browse Japanese media. If this were the case, it would explain why the plot and art took a nose dive, maybe the author didn't want to draw it anymore, or just didn't care.
I really want to know what happened here. As I mentioned before, I've never seen something this bizarre happen to a piece of media before. The manga took an entirely Shounen direction while being published on a Seinen magazine, which could just be irrelevant, but it could also be an interesting tidbit. Horrific fall-offs are pretty frequent, but I feel like there is more to this than meets the eye. A complete artist swap, possibly even a writer swap had to have taken place. In the end, I would still recommend reading the first ten chapters and pretending that it ended there, as that would be the best case scenario for this manga.
