That annoying protagonist; that one which always gets on your nerves. That selfish little brat that can't seem to think about anyone other than himself. You can't wait for him to mature or to even get out of the picture... which makes his consequent realistic character development and progression all the more gripping and striking. The fantasy world setting and the friends that help help both Hikari and Luke to mature into hugely likeable characters are similar, but the growth itself is the most wonderful shared development to behold. TL:DR: Highly annoying protagonists slowly mature into absolutely lovable characters (and similar feel throughout). Fantasy setting.

Gundam IBO and Wolf's Rain both have a heavy plot and one that seems like it could be tragic at first glance (one is a war story and the other is a post-apocalyptic anime so that's to be expected), but they still remain largely hopeful for most of their run time. But not in the sequels. Both series are like a train here- continuously accelerating towards the final point, but then the train gets derailed somewhere in the middle and fall off the tracks due to a character decision or plot point. It continues speeding up and up towards the final colliding point without letting up for even a bit, and you can't help but feel that the main cast is doomed. Except you can't turn your eyes away from this crashing fast-paced ride. They both have that kind of despair. And surprisingly enough, the train slows down right before crashing, at the last moment. It still collides with a bang, but because you were expecting a completely and utterly destroyed train at the end, you are unusually happy about this ending. It feels happy and hopeful. They both have that kind of bittersweet ending. TL;DR The execution of the despair-inducing middle part and final uplifting ending is largely similar between these two titles, and I haven't seen anything like it elsewhere. The setting made you expect it (similarly) but what you had seen up until that point for both shows certainly didn't.
