Hope you like all the usual cliches, because this show throws em at you fast!
- Guy with no magic who dreams of becoming the best mage?
- Childhood promise with female friend to be bestest ever, only for him to get left behind?
- Enrolling in school that specifies in for one thing, despite not being able to do that one specific thing?
- Noble class that frequently talks about being nobles & "elites" in every sentence?
- MC bullied & constantly talked down to by everyone because of his lack of magical talent?
In the school he's in, it requires a certain amount of credits in several different fields
...
to graduate. To get around this, he thinks he can skip the couple fields that require spells writing & practicing magic, and instead focus on the ones that don't. This is a ridiculous premise as it is, and just imagine how that would work in any other field on earth.
Maybe you want to make it to the NBA but have no shooting skills & are extremely out of shape. Just read REALLY hard & learn about past NBA greats, then memorize all their stats! Maybe you want to be a doctor & go to med school, but you can't figure out what any of your material means... Take hundreds of art & music credit hours to make up the difference! Or maybe you want to be a Japanese translator for diplomat, but can't figure out how to learn the language. Just be VERY enthusiastic & show them your anime collection, and surely you'll succeed through sheer determination!
Why can't these anime characters go to school for something they actually CAN do? If you can't use magic, perhaps going to school for exclusively for magic isn't the best plan?
Anyway, our main character Mash, I mean Asta, I mean Touma, I mean Deuk (pre-All Might), Handyman Satou, OK I mean Will wants to prove he can do it anyway, because he's super strong & stuff. He's going to "turn the world on its head" by showing all these self-important snobs how awesome he without magic!
And just like an Isekai, he will frequently run into people who boast about how special & noble they are, only to have their superiority taken down a few pegs when they see just how amazing Will really is. But will that stop them from belittling him? Of course not, otherwise the show would run out of constant conflict & chances to show off how cool Will is!
Yeah... so I know I sound very negative, but it's probably because I'm so bored with these kinds of premises. It's like Japanese writers are forced to make everything some conflict between nobles & lower class bums, where the nobles only personality trait is telling everyone they're a noble. They're like the vegans of anime, and it's tiresome.
Outside of that, the visuals are excellent! There's some CGI used in parts, but it's not distracting & blends well with the hand-drawn elements. The animation is great, and it's genuinely cool to watch how scenes unfold with the sweeping camera & dynamic angles. While the story is nothing unique or interesting, I know I'll keep watching just because the artistry surrounding it is so appealing.
So for that, I'm giving it a 6/10. The production values are great, the characters & story are about as milquetoast & by the numbers as you can get.
