Black Lagoon is the perfect show to recommend to your guy friends who don't watch/haven't seen anime, given they have a fancy for action and adult content. The immense usage of curse words and flashy gun action, along with Revy's beautiful ass will keep your noob friend entertained and distracted like a baby who is having keys dangled in front of it, but does Black Lagoon have the ability to entertain us more "avid" viewers?
The answer is yes IF you don't it too seriously. The story starts off with our lead "Okajima Rokuro", a 20 something business man who lives a boring, monotonous life serving
...
as a punching bag for his company and boss, UNTIL.!!1.!!.. he has to deliver some some disk thing to china or whatever. The ship Mr. Okajima is on get's raided by modern day pirates, then some bullshit ensues and "Rock" as he is newly dubbed, ends up as the crew's newest member. The ship's crew consists two irrelevant characters with little screen time, our MC Rock, and Finally, Revy. Revy is the bad ass bitch you see on the cover, and she is what many would say, the best thing about this show. Actually, she pretty much IS the show. Her jean shorts and and merciless ability to kill anyone pretty much provide the make up of this series.
So now, the story has been established, from this point on the show just follows random missions that the crew go on, often told in 2-3 episode story arcs. During this time, we get some good pretty good character development brewing while we explore Revy's dark past, and Rock's struggle to fit in, but other than that there's pretty much no progression in the series.
The art and sound are up to par but nothing special, they do their job without any serious shortcomings.
Even though there are near constant explosions and gun fights, the lack of a plot driving the action makes this show feel more like the wave pool at a water park rather than the 5 story high mega water slide. That's why i recommend watching this show on the side, along with another series that you care for more, because every now and then the wave pool is a nice, relaxing departure from the more serious anime you might be watching. Especially when nobody is peeing in the water... xD

Gunslinger Girl is yet another example of an anime that could have been great had it not focused on all the wrong aspects.
When series have 12-14 episodes they don't have much time to thoroughly introduce more than 1 or 2 characters; Gunslinger Girl gives 5 characters their own episodes to show you their back story and their relationship with their handlers. When a series dedicates half of its episodes to introductions, that doesn't leave the plot (or lack there of) in good condition. To be frankly honest there was no actual plot. There's no antagonist, protagonist, climax, nothing. This show's plot is strictly the character

development of these little girls, but if that's the case they didn't need to use half the series to introduce them when they could have easily knocked all of them out in one or two episodes and leave the rest to the character development. After the character introduction's the series basically consists of the girls talking to each other and their handlers. There are far too few action scenes in this series, and none of them last longer than 2-3 minutes, which is a shame because the action could have been the best part of the series.
The story and pacing might be poorly executed but pretty much everything else shines. The art is beautiful, i absolutely love the realism, you almost forget you're watching a cartoon sometimes. There are no silly anime cliche's (like a giant tear of sweat when the character gets nervous, nose bleeds, getting kicked into outer space by a 10 year old girl) the characters move and talk like real people would and the gun's look and shoot equally well. Every frame of this series is beautiful and has such fluidity, (including the action, i'll get to that in a sec). Throughout the series you see pretty much every major Italian city in magnificent detail; the art galleries in Florence and the chase scenes through Rome's back alleys are a just a small percent of the impressive visuals you will get in this series. The sound is equally stellar with a perfect pairing of The Delgados and classical music.
I have no idea what gunslinger girl is or what it intended to be. What i do know is that this series works better as a piece of art than as a story. As the series came to a close i found myself more infatuated with the world than the moral struggles of the characters. Gunslinger Girl weaves a beautiful world but fails to emote any feelings of suspense or drama from the viewer. Had this series been more action oriented with a solid plot driving the action this could have been an amazing series.

Highschool of the Dead is a diamond in the rough. No matter how much the studio tries to unknowingly sabotage this series by filling it with overly abundant fan service you can't help but get drawn in (especially if your a zombie fan like myself).
Most of the main cast grow out of their stereotypes towards the middle of the series and for a show thats main selling point is sex, guns, and tits, the characters are surprisingly multidimensional. The dialogue exchanged between the main cast is for the most part very well written and the topics they discuss go deeper than your typical zombie
...
fare and yet, the show is still able to deliver it's jokes with perfect execution.
Besides the somewhat unoriginal looking female characters, the visuals in this series pass with flying colors. The action looks spectacular and the gun play in particular is reminiscent of Angel Beats! which is a good thing. The show does a magnificent job of depicting this lifeless japan that these kids are traveling through; the scenes with Komuro riding on his motorcycle with abandoned towns and cities in the background are masterfully done and really draw you deeper into the world the characters are in.
And finally, probably the best feature of this series, Komuro Takashi. Harem's for the most part have male leads that have the sexual libido of a wet carrot but every once in a while you get one that's a bad ass and damn it that's something to cherish! Komuro is one of the best harem leads in a while because he is the exact opposite of the cliche males we've seen in the moe drenched harems of the past few years.
If you can look past the gimmicks that the producers used to try to make this show sell, you find something much more special. when i first started watching i was expecting explosions, boobs, and weapons, but what i got (along with boobs and explosions) was a story about change, humanity, and acceptance.
