Doumo
I had a weird, uneven path to anime. As a very young kid in the early 80s I think the first thing I saw and was really into was Voltron (the Go-Lion one). Then there was a really long gap until my late 20s until I saw Paranoia Agent, which to this day is my absolute favorite. I re-watch it every couple of years.
After another very long gap I started getting interested in watching again. But I have time and access to Crunchyroll now, so I'm making up for lost time.
I'm still figuring out what I like and what I don't. And I'm still in that early stage where everything I like is "7 or above" to me. But it could also be that there's just so much anime I have access to, if anything is mediocre or worse to me I just bail on it. So it could be a selection bias on my part. I could also just not have the best taste. I mean, I legitimately liked Accel World. I didn't *love* it, but I kinda wished it had another season.
Things I find I generally go for, with favorite examples:
* Absurd comedy, like Saiki-K, Asobi Asobase, and Aho-Girl. Shirokuma Cafe (my namesake) isn't generally absurd but I did find it hilarious.
* Slice-of-life, like Masterful Cat, I Can't Understand What My Husband is Saying, and My Roommate is a Cat
* Things that will make me tear up. Courtesy of my psych meds I may as well be the Stone Hashira at this point so it doesn't leave much out, but Fruits Basket was a great example, and currently at least once an episode as I'm binging Natsume Juujinchou. And not surprisingly quite a few tears fell during Shirokuma Cafe. Meds, I tells ya.
* In the vein of Natsume, generally I like things that are historically themed and/or have yokai. I know that's broad and anime weaves in a lot of that all the time, but I mean as primary drivers. InuYasha, Mushishi, Heike Monogatari, Mononoke, Apothecary Diaries, shows like that.
* Anime that are complex or complicated, or are trying to tackle a "big" question or issue of sorts. Like Paranoia Agent did with our tendency towards escapism.
* I enjoy some of the big shonen anime as well, like MHA, Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No 8.
I'm in the very early stages of learning Japanese. My dream goal is to learn enough to follow along with Heart Cocktail. If I'm lucky I'll get there by the time I qualify for Social Security.
