After watching this movie yesterday, i left feeling conflicted. I had felt that there was no point to the story. Every movie should follow a "moral of the story" or perhaps give a lesson to the viewer. Yet watching this movie, you are left mourning given a fairly depressing ending, now left with the question; What was the point of all of this? However, It wasn't until after I had gone home, thought about it, and reflected on what had been portrayed to me, that I came to the conclusion that this movie really did have a point, a very sad point.
Similarly, with much

of Tatsumi Fujimoto's work, there was a sense of cruelty mixed with humour. Instead of shielding the audience with a happy ending and pandering to the emotions of the masses, the author decided to instead both pander to our emotions, whilst also not allowing it to be a reality. Upon the death of Kyomoto, Fujino is left with a feeling of regret; blaming herself for Kyomoto's death. Her last words to her were horrible and she had been Fujino's reason for even being a Mangaka. The viewer is left thinking "is that really all" and yes, if the movie had ended there I would have given this a much lower rating. However, what ensues is a separate timeline, one in which Fujino never took Kyomoto out of her house. At this point of the movie I was left thinking "that's not right, Fujino gave Kyomoto freedom and allowed her to enjoy her life and write manga with someone she admired". The anime however depicted the same old Kyomoto we all knew, also at university just like in the original timeline. The murderer walks in then BAM she gets saved by Fujino, yay now Fujino lives. However in this timeline, (seemingly) neither of them worked on manga anymore. Of course, it ends the scene with Fujino asking Kyomoto to work on manga with her, now that shes saved from the murderer, giving the viewer a ray of hope.
Now, would Fujino really have been there? I believe not. I believe this timeline depicted two possible outcomes, one where Fujino had saved Kyomoto, and another where if Fujino wasn't there Kyomoto would have likely died either way. This in my opinion is the author hinting at the truth. Whether Fujino had taken Kyomoto out of her house or not would not have affected where Kyomoto had been, she would have still gone to university and would have still ended up in the same situation and died. The realization I was left with was that it didn't matter if Fujino had taken Kyomoto out of her house or not, she would have still died. The one difference being that Kyomoto was secretly a blessing to Fujino, having brought her back into her passion and ambition for manga. We also see this when she is asked her reason for writing manga, there's a pause and in my opinion implying that for Fujino, Kyomoto was the reason she had been working on Manga. Fujino also allowed Kyomoto to experience a normal life, with someone she admired greatly. Theres a montage of them growing up with each other, writing/drawing manga and living life, something that would have otherwise been inaccessible for Kyomoto.
So, in the end I feel like this story really did have a reason for existing. While the ending may be depressing, it also gives the viewer confidence that this was the best timeline and that in the end Fujino and Kyomoto were both a blessing to each other.
TLDR: A short yet emotional film depicting the friendship between two female characters. One who is outgoing and another who is a shut-in. It concludes with a bitter-sweet ending (more bitter though). It leaves you to face the reality that many works of fiction refuse to acknowledge and instead of giving a happy ending, portrays a possible ending, that leaves the viewer thinking to themselves if there really was anything worth changing.
The Animation was beautiful, scenes like Fujino running were done simplistically yet beautifully and although there is a use of CGI it is really good CGI. The music was awesome, the OST helped portray Fujino's emotions extremely well.
I feel like this is both mixed feelings and a recommendation. Though you might have mixed feelings while watching the movie, it is definitely worth it because of its creativity and abstract conclusion with alternate realities/timelines.
