How can I say this, or well even make it. Welcome to the NHK was an experience. A damn nice one. Heartbreaking, heart wrenching and depressing, even funny here and there. But what I'm going base this review on is a newbies guide to watching the anime. I'll try not to spoil too much of it! Anyways, here we go.
The anime bases around the character Satou, a hikkomori, a neet, a hermit, or as the common word is used, outcast of society. Day in and out he smokes, drinks and wastes his life on meaningless things. It can be relatable, very, very relatable. Why did
...
Satou do such thing? Well, a little spoiler ahead. . . Because he thought everybody was against him, hated him, spoke behind his back. I'm like this, completely. Even on the internet, I always think my friends or even strangers talk behind my back, and that leads to me just wanting to curl up into my bed, and never leave it. That is the exact same thing Satou is doing, and mind you, this goes on for the whole 24 episodes, as we learn about him, and see him grow slowly, with the help of the main characters, Misaki and Yamazaki. Yamazaki being his friend, and Misaki being his sort of helper. These two relationships would go onto build and shape Satou into what he would be within the very last episode. As you go through these episodes, expect to laugh, and even if you can relate, feel depressed, cry and even find Satou and Yamazaki as your own friends. Welcome to the NHK explores a lot of themes, the themes of depression, self-loathing, untrusting and further dropping into the pits of insanity and how it can turn one into an outcast.
Then we jump towards the good sound and music. The OST, Youkoso Hitori Bocchi, is one I still listen to even today and even the main theme Puzzle. Whenever I hear these OSTs, it is very nostalgic, and very attached to my life. I can't help but listen to it all when I'm feeling within the deepest pits of it all. That is what I feel like when I listen to them. It's both a nice and sad feeling to have.
Then we jump onto the characters. Each character has a personality, none of them are bland. But also all of them have something they struggle with. As I don't want to go into this, I'll leave it up to you new guys who'll watch it.
And now, my personal enjoyment of this anime. If it wasn't enough to see, I love this anime, there is no hate in it. It has opened up many things to me, and of course it has led me out of the life that I really do not like. I was not a neet like Satou, I just liked staying within home, and whenever I had the holidays, I never went out. All I can say is now. I love this anime, it will forever stick within my heart, as a special, very special anime.
