I understand the first episode being a little rough, but this is really a love story between two kids that are bad at expressing themselves, and that's really because of their inexperience. There really isn't any dom/sub stuff here because both characters have their own flaws, which is rare for anime of this genre I suppose. I'd like to point out if you compare episode one to the upcoming final episode you will see the character progress sprinkled, its not overwhelming or anything, but it is there. Senpai and Nagatoro help each other grow as a person, not just discovering feelings of romance but to ... come out of their shell.

Even if you don't agree with the story, you can't deny the production value on this show is truly fantastic. The way the colors of the art shine, how they animate both facial expressions and actions taken directly from the manga, definitely from a studio that admires the mangaka's work. The voice direction on senpai and especially Nagatoro really is flawless, adds on to the fact that Nagatoro's voice actress sings both the op and ed themes. If you see the translation of the lyrics to both songs, she expresses how she really feels.

If you stick around and genuinely enjoy romance and happygoodfeels, you won't be disappointed. It isn't for everyone, because not everyone grew up with this kind of relationship in their life, but it doesn't promote bullying. Just highlights elements of our youth that some may have forgotten.

This series showcases youth. What it means to grow up without the experience of how to handle certain situations. We were all like that in one way or another, but of course everyone is different. So I can understand why someone would drop after the early chapters. But I'd like to point out, that the 1st chapter displays the flaws of the characters to the audience, so that the reader can view how much they've grown throughout the story. I think it is a bold choice, and why many people did not get very far. But this goes back to my original point: this ... focuses on our youth.

Because these characters openly show their flaws, the audience can relate more effectively. Say you had moments of being socially awkward or shy, or you liked someone but wasn't sure how to approach, and end up embarrassing yourself. It can be cringe, it can be annoying "MC has no spine!" However, it also makes you want these characters to improve, and they do, but slowly. It makes the character and relationship progression become much more impactful. The "wholesome moments" that others mention this series has, hits those emotional high notes because you can see the improvement. Rather than simply a character admitting their feelings, you also see an improvement for them as a person.

These are the reasons why I believe this story has the ability to really touch your heart and soul. It reminds us of a time when we had difficulties expressing ourselves. Heck I know some adults who are married and they have communication problems. It has a little something for everyone.

Also, despite the mangaka having a history of certain material, we all have to start somewhere, right?
