Up front, this is probably my favourite anime, and on the shortlist of my favourite animated shows overall. While there are some anime tropes, they are there to lighten the rather dark story. The MC's methodical actions and his explanations of why he does things are what make this show stand out to me.

While it has some interesting elements, overall it's not outstanding. The MC is one step away from the nose-bleeding virgin trope. The classmate potential love interest is shrill and easily excitable. Really, the demon is the best part of it, but she's not enough to save the show, and fan service doesn't count toward that.
Even the storyline seemed a bit disjointed to me and the magic system was never well defined. In this case, what you see in ep. 1 you will see more of throughout. There is some story/character development, but not enough to make me come back for another season.

While by no means perfect, Gate manages to (mostly) balance the goofy anime tropes (slacker otaku MC, harem-ish elements, etc.) with some serious geo-political and military elements. As a military guy, I appreciated the way the technical weapon characteristics were captured, and that magic, while present, wasn't a cheat code vs. reality in the show. I didn't think Itami (the nominal MC) was as well rounded as he could be, but he always came through when it mattered.
Anything else would get into spoiler territory, but if you are undecided, try a couple of episodes before bailing, as it gets more interesting as it goes along. |
