I just finished watching this a second time because I blew through it so fast the first time. I'm going to break it down to tell you why I love this series.
Music:
The musical scores for Yuuri's routines were beyond amazing. Yuuri's "Yuuri on Ice" had me tearing up at times. I loved that score so much that I started to learn it on the piano. "Eros"- another one of Yuuri's routines was also beautiful. I felt like I was there watching a real ice skating competition because the music was so well done. Ahh! I can't even explain how moved I was listening and watching

this show. The music really made it beyond average.
Characters:
All the characters are great. Victor's personality is what really drives the show for me. I love chaotic, but well-meaning characters. He kind of reminds me of Satoru Gojo's personality, but without the violent side. Yuuri is just too adorable, yet dynamic as well. He struggles with anxiety, which is very well depicted in the show. Even in my second time watching it I could feel his anxiety at the China Cup. It's not often that I am moved by a character so much so that I can feel the emotion oozing out of them and the show. Also, all the male skaters seemed to have good relationships with one another. No toxicity and there was genuine support and respect for each other during each performance.
Story: (I won't go into too much detail to avoid spoilers.)
Great contained story with room for another season. I absolutely love competitive ice skating. I competed when I was little, and even though I was around 5-7 years old I will never forget what it felt like to be on the ice. This show replicates that feeling for me. Such a beautiful art form. Very freeing.
Yuuri and Victor's Relationship:
I hear a lot of ppl talk about Yuuri and Victor's relationship as "queer bating". I don't know why they are so hung up on that. In my opinion, the main story is about their relationship, whatever it may be, and ICE SKATING. This whole show is about the supposed world of competitive ice skating and I think some ppl forget that. I never once thought of Yuuri and Victor's relationship as an issue. It's a positive undertone to the show and the nuances in their relationship are so cute. Regardless of if they are canon or not (I'm pretty sure they are) their relationship still has value.
Yuuri's love for Victor was practically shoved in our faces the whole series. He was Yuuri's idol, his teacher. Victor was someone who taught Yuuri how to love himself and how to love others. Heck, Yuuri's whole skate program was focused around Love. He also comments several times that he loves Victor and that he is the only one who knows Victor's love. This show focuses more on ice skating than showcasing their relationship, which I think is a wonderful thing. To me, this story is one of the most realistic depictions of love, regardless of what that love may be or who it may be between. Yuuri and Victor's relationship is so sweet and wholesome. It evolves in a realistic way and leaves you wanting to know more of their story.
I would also like to add that I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and am not offended in the slightest by Yuuri and Victor's relationship. It's so positive/healthy/supportive. If anything this show is telling its viewer that it's ok to love whoever and however you want. As long as you love yourself as well. Their love is not flashy or in your face. It's a slow wave that lifts you up, catches you when you break, and steadily rolls you to the shore.
