This is my first time writing a review after 5 years of watching anime and still I don’t have enough confidence in this.
"I started this show as a child and finished it as a man"
This is what I read once I've just started the anime in a Youtub comment, and now I agree to that wholeheartedly. I get tear up at all drama shows at least once, but this was the only show that made me cry literally every single episode. I brought my coffee with me and suddenly realize the episode is over and I’ve only take one sip.
Compared to many popular
...
shows, new or old, I think Rainbow is highly underrated. Many may say “This is a random story of people routine life” but well, aren’t many other famous anime like that?
Story- 9/10: Story begins at 1955 in a time that Japan is still dealing with the damages of WII. When 6 teenage criminals enter the disciplinary school they become inmates with Sakuragi Rukurouta. And eventually as the story continues they start to develop a bond of friendship and trust between themselves. This is the story of seven friends with complicated backgrounds that try to deal with the hardship and cruelty of the world after war, inside and outside the prison.
The friendship between the characters makes so question your own life, your own friendships and what you’ve been doing with your life up till now.
Music-10/10: Anime opening/ending and the OST play a very important role in the shows. It can bring up various emotions, and in case of Rainbow I think it did a pretty good job. From the hardcore opening by Coldrain that hit you every time in the beginning with the high notes to the touching and epic ost that can bring you to tears even with just listening to it alone.
Art-8/10: The show may not have much of attractive faces or colorful concepts like most of the anime shows, it’s sad and depressing the colors of the environment, houses, character designs are mostly dark, there’s hardly any bright colors and that’s what makes it effective and terrifying. How it stabs you in the heart and drags you right to the hell. But then the frame freezes and you’re blinded by the colors of hope and happiness with touching narration. Every time the show mercilessly teaches you the one of the unfairness and brutality of the world but in the end there’s the eruption of colors. The silver lining of hope that comes up in the darkest moments.
Character-8/10:
Enjoyment- 9/10: of course I enjoyed it wholeheartedly as much as I felt my heart is tearing apart struggling with all those terrifying and depressing moment.
